How do we cultivate a resistance of consciousness in the face of pervasive disconnection? Where do doubts about truth originate and how do we get people to take truth seriously? How can we unpack what motivates people\, so we can pave the way for a more harmonious existence on this planet? \nJoin us as we reflect on and live amid these questions. We are in tumultuous and judgmental times\, but during such periods of upheaval\, there is always incredible opportunity for artists to step forward and remind us who we can be as human beings.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_column_text] \nAbout Michele Shay\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \n\nMichele Shay—actress\, director\, educator\, and noted interpreter of the works of playwright August Wilson—is perhaps best known for her Tony Award-nominated performance as Louise in August Wilson’s Seven Guitars. She is a veteran actress who has graced stages on and off-Broadway\, television and film\, and regional theaters across the country. Michele has portrayed Aunt Ester in Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean in productions directed by Kenny Leon\, Phylicia Rashad and Ruben Santiago-Hudson; and Mame Wilks in the world premiere of Wilson’s Radio Golf\, directed by Timothy Douglas at Yale Rep. \nMichele has directed seven plays in the Cycle including Fences\, Gem of the Ocean\, Seven Guitars\, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone\, and The Piano Lesson (with Tonya Pinkins\, Montae Russell and Glynn Turman for CCAP at the Broad Theatre). Michele participated with a host of other longtime August Wilson collaborators in directing Two Trains and King Hedley II for the NY Public Radio recordings of August Wilson’s American Century Cycle at The Greene Space. \nShe is Professor of Theatre Practice in Acting and Chair of Performance at USC School of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles. She has previously taught at California Institute of the Arts\, American Conservatory Theater\, Actors Theater of Louisville\, Denver Center\, University of North Carolina School of the Arts\, and the New Studio on Broadway at New York University Tisch School of the Arts. A Carnegie Mellon graduate\, Michele is also a Fox Grant recipient researching the connection between the human energy system\, healing and performance. Together in pairs\, participants will prepare a scene from one of the three plays and will have the opportunity to work twice over the workshop. Previously\, she spent 20 years on the faculty of Yale School of Drama\, where she was a professor in the practice of acting and directing and Lloyd Richards chair of the department of acting from 1998 to 2003. \nShe has directed new plays and classics in New York\, across the country\, and internationally\, including Adrienne Kennedy’s He Brought Her Heart Back in a Box (world premiere) and Ohio State Murders (Lortel Award\, best revival) for Theatre for a New Audience\, Richard Greenberg’s The Violet Hour (Broadway)\, Three Days of Rain (Obie for direction\, Manhattan Theatre Club)\, and Everett Beekin (Lincoln Center Theater)\, and\, during her 20 years as a resident director at Yale Repertory Theatre\, productions including Shakespeare’s Richard II and Cymbeline\, Brecht’s Galileo\, Ibsen’s The Master Builder\, and Guillermo Calderón’s Kiss. With composer/lyricist Mike Yionoulis\, she is developing the multi-platform project Redhand Guitar\, about five generations of musicians across an American century\, and The Dread Pirate Project\, about identity and anonymity across the digital and natural worlds. \nShe is a Princess Grace Award recipient and serves as president of the executive board of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society. We’ll explore the moment-to-moment demands of Ibsen’s dialogue and examine the actor’s work in arriving at character needs that meet the size of the world of these plays. Together in pairs\, participants will prepare a scene from one of the three plays and will have the opportunity to work twice over the workshop. Chekhov believed ‘inherent in every actor is the desire for transformation\,’ and he set out a method that is playful\, imaginative\, safe\, healthy\, creative\, and accessible to anyone truly looking to experience themselves differently. Alexander’s own quest began as an attempt to solve his vocal issues. Later on he realized that body\, mind\, and breath were all part of the same complex organism\, which he called “self”.  In order to look at voice and breath we need to first understand how the body works. In this workshop\, Fabio will guide an exploration of ideas and activities to encourage the expansion of the back—lengthening of the spine and widening of the back ribs—to produce sound and movement with more ease and flow. Whether on stage or on set\, the principles are the same: A longer and wider back will enable more support\, strength\, and freedom. In the latter part of each session\, participants will be invited to bring in film or TV sides or text to work from\, exploring one-on-one adjustments in the work. Alexander’s own quest began as an attempt to solve his vocal issues. Later on he realized that body\, mind\, and breath were all part of the same complex organism\, which he called “self”.  In order to look at voice and breath we need to first understand how the body works. In this workshop\, Fabio will guide an exploration of ideas and activities to encourage the expansion of the back—lengthening of the spine and widening of the back ribs—to produce sound and movement with more ease and flow. Whether on stage or on set\, the principles are the same: A longer and wider back will enable more support\, strength\, and freedom. In the latter part of each session\, participants will be invited to bring in film or TV sides or text to work from\, exploring one-on-one adjustments in the work. Sessions run Thursdays and Fridays from 1pm-4pm. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_column_text] \nAbout Fabio Tavares\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nFabio Tavares (he/him) is a Brazilian artist who’s been obsessed with the human body in action from a very young age. He started off as a competitive gymnast before running away to join the circus at the age of 15 where he got his first professional job as an acrobat. Fabio moved to New York in 1999 where he’s been dancing\, teaching and making art since. \nHe has collaborated and performed with Yvonne Meyer\, chameckilerner\, Miguel Gutierrez\, Fisherspooner\, Noemie Lafrance\, Luis Lara Malvacías\, Jeniffer Monson\, Circus Amok\, John Heginbotham\, Laurie Anderson\,The Dazzle Dancers\, The Daisy Spurs\, Stanley Love\, Anna Kohler\, Anne Bogart and the acclaimed SITI Company. Fabio has danced with Elizabeth STREB and her extreme-action company for 14 years where he served as the Associate Artistic Director for a decade. Fabio’s one man show The Ex-Body based on the text “The Hamletmachine” by Henier Müller has been performed in Brazil\, Europe and the US since 2010. \nFabio is an AmSAT certified Alexander Technique teacher \, a certified Klein Technique™ teacher\, and a Certified Zero Balancing practitioner.
