It’s become clear to me that my first-hand experiences—of black theatre history\, civil rights\, Vietnam protests\, counter-culture-east-village NYC\, and my acting-directing-writing career—are informative in another way. They’re not in a book or documentary. I was there. My spoken journals allow me to convey the emotions of those experiences\, along with the actual events. Although these stories are solidly mine\, I also speak for millions of women—of-color and others—who didn’t write it down.” \nPart generative writing workshop and part communal sharing\, Seret will read from her own writings and guide participants through conversation and exercises exploring the power of personal narrative and history\, with time at the end for participants to share work of their own.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_column_text css=””] \nAbout Seret Scott\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Seret Scott is a theatre director\, playwright\, and actress who starred in Kathleen Collins seminal film\, Losing Ground. Her Broadway acting credits include For Colored Girls and My Sister\, My Sister\, for which she won a Drama Desk Award. She has directed off-Broadway and at regional theatres across the country. In 2020 she was honored with the Gordon Davidson Directing Award for Lifetime Achievement in Regional Theatre. \nOff-Broadway directing credits include PanAsian Rep\, The Acting Co\, National Black Theatre\, Second Stage\, New Victory. Regional directing credits include The Old Globe\, Court Theatre\, Yale Rep\, Westport Country Playhouse\, Arena Stage\, Woolly Mammoth\, Ford Theatre\, Atlas/DC\, Oregon Shakespeare\, South Coast Rep\, ACT\, Long Wharf\, Hartford Stage\, Baltimore Center Stage\, Studio Theatre\, Denver Center\, Crossroads\, Two River\, Actors Theatre of Louisville\, Indiana Rep\, Alliance Theatre\, and PlayMakers Rep\, among others. She is a former Director in Residence at New Dramatists. She has additionally directed at Howard\, Juilliard\, NYU Tisch\, Fordham\, and University of Maryland. \nIn 1969\, Seret was a member of the Free Southern Theater\, a civil rights organization that performed throughout rural Louisiana and Mississippi. Through body-focused exercises designed to expand emotional range and physically access six key emotions\, Sarah will guide actors in learning to come in and out of intense emotional states quickly\, safely\, and repeatably without needing to refer to traumatic memories or personal story. Participants will learn to organically transition through emotions or combine emotions to cultivate complexity\, depth\, and nuance in their work\, as well as explore how to apply emotion into text work. Beyond the stage and screen\, this holistic approach helps to reframe one’s understanding of emotions to not only refine artistic skills\, but manage auditions and stage-fright\, develop emotional intelligence\, and improve wellbeing. Ted’s workshops are based on the question\, “What do you want to do with this role?” and there is a great deal to consider to effectively answer that question. Regardless of where you are on the call sheet\, when the camera is on you\, you’re #1 in the shot\, so what do you want to do with that opportunity? Ted will collaborate with actors to mine every detail in a script\, to be used to build a solid scene\, performance\, or audition. Once all the analysis is done\, Ted will guide participants in exploring what they want to accomplish artistically and how they can collaborate with any project to serve the world of the script\, the story\, the visual\, and most importantly the character\, so that their artistic signature is on the role whether it is a guest\, recurring\, or series regular. Participants will each work twice over the four weeks. Masks unlock the deep knowledge of the physical\, emotional\, and intuitive body\, which directly interacts with taksu—a Balinese concept of performance energy marking the divine moment of manifestation. Understand its universal presence and its ability to transcend cultures and become a source of inspiration for your craft. \nParticipants will then have the opportunity to work from the intersection of their own culture on scenes\, using a vast network of scripts that Taylor has assembled from around the world. The process aims to enable participants to explore and celebrate their cultural heritage while pushing them in their training\, selecting scenes with a focus on cultural nuance and dramatic challenge. \nParticipants will experience a visceral awareness of character transformation and explore aspects of movement\, improvisation\, ensemble training\, character embodiment\, and spiritual practice for actors\, fostering genuine artistic and spiritual growth.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_column_text css=””] \nAbout Budi Miller\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””] \nDr. Budi Miller is the former Head of Acting at the Victorian College of the Arts\, University of Melbourne (UoM)\, Australia (the first black person to hold this position at one of the top 3 drama schools in Australia). Sessions run Friday mornings 10:00am-1:00pm. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_column_text css=””] \nAbout Ted Sluberski\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]For the past 20 years Ted Sluberski has worked as an acting coach primarily in film and television. Sessions run Friday mornings 10:00am-1:00pm. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_column_text css=””] \nAbout Ted Sluberski\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]For the past 20 years Ted Sluberski has worked as an acting coach primarily in film and television. He has collaborated with actors in every genre from Studio features to Indie film and Streaming series to network series. Here you will find a supportive\, safe virtual space where artists in our company bring their stories\, concerns\, questions\, recommendations\, and inspirations in a free-wheeling but facilitated discussion. With no set agenda\, we delve into whatever is of interest or concern in any given week. Company members host or facilitate projects—play reading groups\, explorations of new material or approaches\, writing labs\, devising work\, field trips\, retreats—in short\, anything inspiring to explore among peers. CoLabs offer creative outlets to explore work you might not otherwise have the opportunity for\, while continuing to share resources and deepen connections among our Actors Center community.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \nComments/Queries\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The same question always starts the work: “What do you want to do with the role?” \nPrior to full-time coaching Ted worked at ICM\, then was a Casting Director for 14 years\, followed by running the Actors and Directors Workshops at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. Leigh will work with company members on scenes from any 20th- or 21st century play of their choosing. Every scene will work each week\, beginning with a first encounter with the text and a particular approach to the memorization process. Throughout\, Leigh will offer insights to support actors in being present\, listening\, trusting connection\, and allowing a great story to emerge\, with the primary aim that participants leave knowing themselves better as artists. Sessions run Tuesdays and Thursdays\, 1:00pm-5:30pm\, over two weeks. \nEnrollment is limited to 14 actors. You can sign up either together with a scene partner or as an individual to be paired with another individual. Participants are strongly encouraged to choose material that is new to them\, and neither rehearse nor memorize before the first session. If you prefer\, Leigh can assign you material or offer suggestions. Occasional conflicts can be accommodated. \nIf you are looking for a scene partner\, you may post in the comments thread\, or you can also find contact information for all members in the member directory.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_column_text] \nAbout Leigh Kilton-Smith\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Leigh Kilton-Smith is a teacher and acting coach with over 35 years of experience in the entertainment industry.
