Arturo Luíz Soria
Arturo is an Obie Award winning actor and playwright based in Brooklyn. His one-man show, or, one-woman show, it’s up for debate, Ni Mi Madre, premiered at Rattlestick Theater in the summer of 2021. It was a NY Times Critic’s Pick and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award, Outer Circle Critics Award, a Drama League Award, and eventually won an Obie Award for Best Performance.
Arturo’s work in the theatre has been extensive, making his Broadway debut in The Inheritance by Matthew López, which won the Tony Award for Best Play. Other theatre credits: Creon in Oedipus el Rey (Victory Gardens Theatre); the World Premiere of El Huracán (Yale Rep); the World Premiere of Seven Spots on the Sun (Cincinnati Playhouse); Eliot in Water by the Spoonful (Studio Theatre); Peter and the Starcatcher (Cincinnati Playhouse, Milwaukee Rep, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis); the World Premiere of OliveRio: A Brazilian Twist (Kennedy Center); and many more.
He was last seen playing the role of Ricky in the World Premiere of Wet Brain at Playwrights Horizons.
Hilton Als from The New Yorker once compared him to a young Al Pacino for his portrayal of the fast-talking-hip-swishing-sharp-tongued Tano in the World Premiere of Hit the Wall by Ike Holter at Barrow Street Theatre and Steppenwolf Theatre. He’s been trying to live up to that ever since.
When Arturo’s not prancing around the stage, he’s doing serious work in TV (Netflix's "Insatiable," CBS’s "The Blacklist," and CBS’s "East New York").
He’s currently got three writing projects in the works: another solo show, Sin Padre, (commissioned by Rattlestick Theatre); a play, Novios, about queer love in the heat of a restaurant kitchen; and a screen adaptation of the novel "Bodega Dreams" for Black Bar Mitzvah Productions, directed by Ángel Manuel Soto.
Arturo holds an MFA from Yale School of Drama; a BFA from The Theatre School at DePaul University; and was part of the inaugural class of TV writers in Lena Waithe's Hillman Grad Mentorship Program. He is a proud member of The Actor’s Center in NYC.
