About the Workshop Casting director Jessica Daniels joins The Actors Center for the first time for a four week workshop devoted to auditioning on-camera. Jessica will work with company members on scenes in real time, with direction that mirrors the flow of an audition room that is specific and responsive. We’ll also dig into self-taping with an emphasis on nailing tone and refining your point of view. In our last session, Jessica will lead a discussion around honing your story and materials so they are clear and true to you. 8 different actors will have the opportunity to work each week. Sessions are 10:00am-1:00pm on Tuesday mornings. In our efforts to expand the efficient and authentic use of our training and performance experience, many of us can find ourselves engaging the process like a fish swimming in the ocean looking for the water. Genuine advancement and deepening of individual process begin when old patterns are no longer unconsciously engaged. This work does not require added effort, but simply renewed attention and awareness. Through in-the-moment investigation of mind, body, and breath consciousness, this workshop invites actors to reconnect with a more centered and organic truth, expressed dynamically through heightened language. Drawing on foundational principles from Kristin Linklater’s Freeing the Natural Voice, participants will explore a fuller appreciation of creativity, presence, and self. Participants will be asked to bring in 8-10 memorized lines of Shakespeare verse from a play (or other heightened language text)—ideally new to the participant. Through improvisation, collaboration, and play-based exercises, we will explore how using games can take the high-stakes pressure out of writing and help participants reconnect with their creative impulses. “I've spent years building plays from the ground up using games—Big Times, A Hudson Holiday, Confidence Camp, Junior Year, and several NYU Games Projects,” says Danielle. “Games are more than just ridiculous fun. They can provide a beautiful foundation to help artists generate and develop material together.” By replacing the blank page with ensemble play, we will quiet the need to get it right, so participants can get out of their own way and create original work from a place filled with joy, spontaneity, generosity, and an appetite for risk-taking. Sessions run weekly, 10am-1pm. About Danielle Skraastad Danielle Skraastad is a director, teacher and actor. Danielle teaches Games at NYU’s MFA Graduate Acting Program. She has worked on the development of The Games Project since 2006. About the Workshop Director, educator, and Yale faculty member, Yura Kordonsky, returns to The Actors Center for a weekend workshop devoted to the plays of Anton Chekhov. Through practical scene work, participants will examine acting as the art of active listening—to text and subtext, to a partner on stage, and to the physical world of the play. Together with Yura, participants will explore characters’ given circumstances, objectives, and dramatic conflicts in the creation of an actor’s path that leads to a truthful, authentic, and multi-layered life on stage. In particular, Yura draws on Stanislavsky’s Method of Physical Actions, an approach to rehearsal that he developed in the final years of his life but did not complete for publication before his death. At the core of this method lies the exploration of a play through the life of the human body, building the character’s complex emotions out of responses to the simple, specific physical reality of the stage world. Participants may choose any 2- or 3-person scene from any of Chekhov’s plays. Yura has shared a list of possible scenes, but participants may select others if desired. Yura has provided a copy of the Laurence Senelick translation of Chekhov’s plays, but any translation can be used. You can sign up either together with partner(s) or as an individual and you will be paired with other individual(s). Each scene will work every day. Very limited conflicts can be accommodated. Through improvisation, collaboration, and play-based exercises, we will explore how using games can take the high-stakes pressure out of writing and help participants reconnect with their creative impulses. “I've spent years building plays from the ground up using games—Big Times, A Hudson Holiday, Confidence Camp, Junior Year, and several NYU Games Projects,” says Danielle. “Games are more than just ridiculous fun. They can provide a beautiful foundation to help artists generate and develop material together.” By replacing the blank page with ensemble play, we will quiet the need to get it right, so participants can get out of their own way and create original work from a place filled with joy, spontaneity, generosity, and an appetite for risk-taking. Sessions run weekly, 10am-1pm. About Danielle Skraastad Danielle Skraastad is a director, teacher and actor. Danielle teaches Games at NYU’s MFA Graduate Acting Program. She has worked on the development of The Games Project since 2006. She has previously taught classes and workshops for SUNY Purchase, SUNY Albany, The Actors Center, the National Alliance of Acting Teachers, QuestStar, SummerStage, The Heifeitz Institute, among others.
