Power Week: A Writing Space, March 2023

Company CoLab POWER WEEK: A Writing Space Monday through Friday on Zoom Upcoming Dates & Times Monday, March 20, 2023 - 9:00am-11:00am ET Tuesday, March 21, 2023 - 9:00am-11:00am ET Wednesday, March 22, 2023 - 9:00am-11:00am ET Thursday, March 23, 2023 - 9:00am-11:00am ET Friday, March 24, 2023 - 9:00am-11:00am ET Monday, March 27, 2023 – 6:30pm-9:30pm ET In Person Alchemical Studios, 50 W 17th Street, 12th Floor, Studio 4 Hosted by Rebecca Harris A Week Dedicated to Showing Up and Writing About the Event Power Week is back, friends. For a week in March, actor and company member Rebecca Harris will be hosting a series of gatherings for company members to work on writing projects. This time around Rebecca invites you to work with the theme, “Everything Old Is New Again.” She encourages people to pick up and tend to material they started in the past.  The past could mean last month or 10 years ago. Of course, the work doesn’t have to be old… but if you are looking for a launch, consider that your challenge. The idea with the meetups is to support each other in making progress with our work by providing consistent time, space, and community, to use as you see fit. The group will meet every weekday over Zoom March 20-24 and finally in person to share the work on Monday, March 27th, 6:30pm-9:30pm at Alchemical Studios. In each of the daily sessions there will be a quick (optional) check in at the beginning. You can feel free to share an intention for the time, or not. And then work, cameras on or off. We'll reconvene around 10:50am to report back or check out, which is also optional. About Company CoLabs Company CoLabs is a series at The Actors Center that offers a framework for collaborative explorations and community programming among company members. Company members host or facilitate projects—play reading groups, explorations of new material or approaches, writing labs, devising work, field trips, retreats—in short, anything inspiring to explore among peers. CoLabs offer creative outlets to explore work you might not otherwise have the opportunity for, while continuing to share resources and deepen connections among our Actors Center community. About the Workshop Actor-creator, director, and educator, Justine Williams, returns to The Actors Center to lead a games workshop over two weeks in March. Sessions run Monday and Wednesday from 10am-1pm. About Justine Williams Justine Wolf Williams is an actor-creator, director and educator working across performance and film. • Film Screening: The Courtroom

Film Screening The Courtroom with Kristin Villanueva and Linda Powell Directed by Lee Sunday Evans Screenplay by Arian Moayed Dates & Times Monday, April 24, 2023 – 7:00pm Macauley Honors College, 35 West 67th St The screening of the film will be followed by a discussion with Kristin Villanueva and Linda Powell. Wine and beverages will be provided. About the Event The Actors Center hosts a film screening and discussion of The Courtroom with company members Kristin Villanueva and Linda Powell on Monday, April 24th at 7:00pm at Macaulay Honors College. The 2022 film from director Lee Sunday Evans and screenwriter Arian Moayed debuted last year at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film tells the story of Elizabeth Keathley (Kristin Villanueva), who came to the United States to begin a hopeful chapter of her life, and start a family with her new husband. Having navigated the labyrinth of U.S. immigration law and started the process of applying for citizenship, Elizabeth set out to do everything right, following all the rules—but one mistake on one piece of paper landed her in a nightmare: deportation proceedings. An emotionally wrenching story of one woman and her lawyer (Linda Powell) fighting to make sure that the country she put all her trust and faith in does not fail her, The Courtroom uses only the verbatim text of the real court transcripts of her case as the dialogue for the film. Originally created by Waterwell as a critically-acclaimed play that premiered Off-Broadway in 2019, The Courtroom offers audiences a rare front-row seat to see the inner workings of our country's immigration court system. The complete cast of the film includes Marsha Stephanie Blake, Michael Braun, Kathleen Chalfant, Hanna Cheek, Michael Chernus, Michael Bryan French, Mick Hilgers, and BD Wong. “The sneaky thing about this re-enactment is that in watching it, we citizens are on trial, too. What kind of a nation are we?” —  The New York Times RSVP Kristin Villanueva most recently performed in Waterwell’s The Courtroom directed by Lee Sunday Evans. Her film credits include The Courtroom, Viper Club, Someone Will Assist You Shortly. TV credits include Bonding, Search Party, That Damn Michael Che, Younger, Elementary, Forever, and Gossip Girl. She frequently collaborates with directors Mike Donahue and Mary Zimmerman. Sessions run Thursdays from 10am-1pm. About Erica Fae Writer, director, performer, and teacher Erica Fae brings radical stories from history to stage and screen. Her first feature To Keep the Light (inspired by women lighthouse keepers in the 1860's) won the Fipresci Prize, among other festival awards, and is currently on Amazon Prime. From Beth: “For folks who are unfamiliar with the term Idiolect, it is the particular way in which one speaks. In my experience, when an actor is in service to a script there is nearly always a transformation in relation to how they speak. Sometimes it can be quite clear because a dialect is required in relation to where the event takes place. Other considerations can be status, gender, age, and tactical i.e. code shifting.” Over two days, Beth will guide participants in exploring the psycho-physical relationship we have with our own idiolect, as well as looking at questions of how the understanding of this cellular relationship can be liberating in terms of transformation, and encourage a robust embodiment in relation to accent and dialect work. Areas of investigation will include: experiential anatomy, breath and vibration, articulation of phonemes, prosody, vowel and consonant systems and their relationship to each other and finally, the transformation of sound into image as spoken in ‘the word’.  Sessions run Saturday and Sunday 12:00pm-4:30pm. About Beth McGuire Beth McGuire has worked as a vocal and accent/dialect coach both on and off Broadway, in regional theatre, and in film and television for over 30 years. She was on the Yale School of Drama faculty for over 20 years and recently joined the faculty of Juilliard Drama Division. Beth lives in NYC and has a private practice teaching and coaching. Writing can often be isolating and working from home can be distracting. Our hope is to establish a designated space to work collectively each week, making the writing process more communal, offering accountability, and creating an opportunity to hear work aloud. The first 90 minutes of the meeting will be devoted to independent work. You are welcome to use that time however you’d like. There will be three prompts offered at the beginning of each session to inspire if needed. The second 90 minutes will be devoted to sharing, and reading. Each week, three people will have the opportunity to sign up for a 30 minute slot to use according to what is most helpful for their process. In most cases, the writer will assign roles for their pages, the pages will be read aloud, and if desired, the writer can ask for a round of feedback based upon their specific questions and needs. If you are not writing, but would like to join for the second half of this gathering to participate or listen to the shared work, you are more than welcome. Sessions run Wednesday mornings from 10am-1pm.
