About the Workshop Actor, teacher, and NYU Grad Acting faculty, Kevin Isola, returns to The Actors Center for a weekend workshop, February 11th and 12th, diving into the world of the clown. Come tap into your sense of joy and invite the assumption of your own brilliance to be a guiding force in your work. We’ll demystify and befriend the concept of failure, so that risk, surprise, fearlessness, and delight can become the backbone of your artistry. Sessions run Saturday and Sunday, 11am-4:30pm with a lunch break. COVID-19 Safety Policies For this workshop: At-home rapid covid test required before each session Masks optional Daily health screening questionnaire Large studio Windows and portable HEPA/equivalent air purifiers About Kevin Isola Kevin Isola has been on the faculty of NYU’s Graduate Acting Program for the past 13 years where he teaches Shakespeare’s Clowns in the first year and Advanced Theatre Clowning Techniques in the third year. Additionally, he’s been invited to teach at The Actors Center, Fordham University, Wagner College, Muhlenberg College, Red Bull Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, and The 52nd Street Project. Kevin is a professional actor who for the past twenty seven years has performed in most every facet of the entertainment industry. From Broadway and Off-Broadway to regional theatre. From Lincoln Center to Shakespeare in the Park, Manhattan Theatre Club to Signature. Yale Rep to The Old Globe, The Guthrie to South Coast Rep. He has worked on everything from major studio films to small independents, streaming services to network shows. He also co-created the clown show The New Bozena with Rainn Wilson (The Office), David Costabile (Billions, Lincoln), and Michael Dahlen (Blue Man Group) which ran for five months Off-Broadway, continued regionally, and sold to Twentieth Century Fox. Do you often find yourself reading a film or tv scene and thinking “there’s not much here” or, on set, asking yourself “why are they shooting it that way?” Our ability to quickly and effectively analyze a scene prior to making specific acting choices ensures we are telling the same story as our collaborators. Damian will guide participants in how to more readily identify genre, story, tone, environment, and emotional stakes of a scene. He will share four distinct scenes from a variety of filmed material. Sessions run Monday and Tuesday, 7:00pm-9:00pm. About Damian Young Damian Young is a career actor with over 100 credited film and television appearances. His work spans the films of Hal Hartley and cult favorite Nickelodeon’s Pete and Pete, to roles in films such as Birdman, Catfight, Wonderstruck, and I Care a Lot. He was a series regular on The Comeback and Ozark, and has recurred on House of Cards, Homeland, and others. Damian has worked extensively in theatre, both on and off-Broadway, as well as regionally. In 2017, Ron was appointed Professor of Professional Practice at the Columbia University School of the Arts Graduate Actor Training Program. Open to observers, all company members are invited to attend. About the Workshop Actor, singer, and company member Judy Kuhn returns to The Actors Center to lead an acting the song workshop over two weeks this spring. This is a class for the actor who sings or the actor who wants to sing. Participants will work individually on material of their choice focusing on song interpretation and vocal performance techniques such as focus and relationship with an audience or scene partner. We will improvise, work on personalization, deep exploration of text and how to “speak” a song. Although this is not a vocal technique class, Judy will address individual technical concerns and make suggestions about how to approach them. This workshop is open to anyone. No experience singing in front of people is necessary. Sessions run Tuesday and Thursday from 10am-1pm. About Judy Kuhn Judy Kuhn is a multiple Tony, Olivier and Grammy Award nominee best known for her work on Broadway in such shows as Fun Home, She Loves Me, Chess, and Les Misérables. Other Bway includes Fiddler on the Roof, Richard Nelson’s Two Shakespearean Actors, Alan Menken and Tim Rice’s King David and the Charles Strouse/Stephen Schwartz musical Rags. Most recently she played Sara Jane Moore in John Doyle’s production of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s Assassins at CSC (OCC & Drama Desk Noms). Through her creative work, she seeks to evoke (and invoke) a sense of playfulness, pathos and poetic possibility. Her performance work has been developed/presented at venues ranging from seedy backroom bars to NY’s snazziest stages and artistic institutions, and her cinematic work has premiered at New Directors | New Films, Woodstock Film Festival, Maryland Film Festival, Rotterdam International Film Festival, and more. Through a finite number of both open and form-based rigorous exercises, the work focuses on the connection of the foot with the floor, building strength in the lower body and expressing via the entire body, not with the face. Strong concentration and physical ease are called upon to do the exercises. When participants push themselves physically—past what they know they can do—they dig deep and access parts of themselves vital in the creative process. When everyone is engaged in the same physical exercises, each person’s individual humanity is revealed. Sessions run Fridays from 10am-1pm. This workshop engages the work and teachings of Tadashi Suzuki combined with Shanga's work both in the classroom and in the profession. Through a finite number of both open and form-based rigorous exercises, the work focuses on the connection of the foot with the floor, building strength in the lower body and expressing via the entire body, not with the face. Strong concentration and physical ease are called upon to do the exercises. When participants push themselves physically—past what they know they can do—they dig deep and access parts of themselves vital in the creative process. When everyone is engaged in the same physical exercises, each person’s individual humanity is revealed. Sessions run Fridays from 10am-1pm. About Shanga Parker Shanga Parker trained as an actor, learned directing, and has taught all kinds of acting. He acts professionally for television, film and theatre. He is an Arts Professor at NYU and Director of the Tisch Summer High School Program. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Columbia MFA Acting Program and at the Iceland University of the Arts. He is a member of SAG/AFTRA and AEA. He has an undergraduate degree from Brown University and an M.F.A. in Acting from UC San Diego. They will then apply this subtle, internal physicality to film work in either short scenes or monologues. Using energetics to ground character and circumstance frees up the mind and helps the actor stay connected in the often fast-paced and barely-rehearsed world of on-camera work. Sessions run Thursdays from 10am-1pm. About Erica Fae Writer, director, performer, and teacher Erica Fae brings radical stories from history to stage and screen. Her first feature To Keep the Light (inspired by women lighthouse keepers in the 1860's) won the Fipresci Prize, among other festival awards, and is currently on Amazon Prime. Her original plays include A Girl Joan, Saved Again and by Him, and Take What Is Yours (with Jill A. Samuels). As actor, she's had recurring roles on HBO's Boardwalk Empire and Doll & Em, Netflix's Partner Track, and has performed in numerous films and plays. This workshop is open to all company members to observe. About the Workshop Acting coach, director, and casting director, Heidi Miami Marshall, returns to The Actors Center for four days facilitating a deep dive look at the audition process, beyond the technical or “techniques.” From Heidi: “This group always inspires me with your commitment and (already) well-honed talents. Just because there's a pending strike, we don't stop. We keep digging in so that you fall (deeper) in love with the process of auditioning and auditioning. I love to activate your confidence in on-camera work.” Sessions run two Monday afternoons 12pm-2pm and two Thursday afternoons 3pm-5pm. All company members are invited to attend. About Heidi Miami Marshall Heidi Miami Marshall’s career has spanned over 25 years as an acting coach, film and theater director, casting director, and acting studio owner. Her entire career informs her director’s eye and influences her aesthetic for working with actors. Originally, Heidi was the lead casting director at Telsey + Co. for the Broadway musical Rent, as well as for 70+ projects in theater, film, TV, commercial, and voiceover.
