All company members are invited to attend. About the Workshop Casting director and teacher Erica Jensen joins The Actors Center for the first time for a three week On-Camera Audition Lab. Over a series of Thursday evenings, Erica will help you refine your audition skills, explore tools and approaches for self taping, and lead conversation about the current industry and casting landscape. Erica will work with 5 participants each week on audition sides of your choice, providing feedback and coaching to address obstacles you may be facing in your audition work, and to support greater agency and individual creative freedom. Sessions meet 6:30pm-9:30pm and take place in person. In addition to her work in casting, Erica is a professor of practice at Syracuse University and the director of the Tepper Semester program, the Department of Drama's New York City immersion program. She is also the founder of the She-Collective, a creative safe space for women, female identifying, and non-binary artists that endeavors to connect and aid actors, writers, producers, directors, and creators from underrepresented and diverse backgrounds. Erica previously taught for both the New School and the Tepper Semester, served as an industry mentor at Brown University/Trinity Rep, and is a proud member of the Casting Society of America. She holds an MFA in Acting from Illinois State University and was named American Theater magazine's Top Theater Workers you should know in 2017. The idea is to support each other in making progress with our work by providing consistent time, space, and community, to use as you see fit. We are launching a reboot of Study Hall and want to welcome any company members who would like to join! For now, we will meet Friday mornings on Zoom from 9:00am until 11:00am. We’ll do a quick (optional) check in at the beginning. You can feel free to share an intention for the time (or not.) And then work, cameras on or off. We’ll reconvene around 10:50am to report back or check out. Again, that’s optional. Come and go as you wish. About the Workshop Acclaimed international director, teacher, and Honorary Associate Director of the RSC, Ron Daniels, returns to The Actors Center for a series of five Wednesday afternoons devoted to Shakespeare's soliloquies. In a collaborative workshop format, each taking turns with the text, we’ll explore moments where both the character and the actor find themselves in a unique situation: alone on stage with nobody but the audience. These are moments when the narrative of the play is suspended and a character confides his or her innermost thoughts with the audience and simply tells the truth, without equivocation. But who is “the audience”? And is the identity of the audience always the same or does it change for different characters and under different circumstances? And above all, if the character is truly engaging with the audience, should we not rather think of these moments as imaginary dialogues between actor and audience instead of as lonely soliloquies? Far from the rush and tumble of the rehearsal room floor and the need to quickly find results, Ron will gently guide participants through unraveling a series of soliloquies, not from an academic, but from an actor’s point of view, inviting greater awareness of moments of possibility and discovery, enhancing the richness of text, and in service of the actor's ability to inhabit Shakespeare's language and make it truly your own. About Ron Daniels Ron Daniels is an Honorary Associate Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, a distinction he received after fifteen years directing many RSC productions and serving as Artistic Director of RSC’s The Other Place Theatre. Yale Rep to The Old Globe, The Guthrie to South Coast Rep. He has worked on everything from major studio films to small independents, streaming services to network shows. About the Workshop Actor and teacher, Welker White, returns to The Actors Center to lead an on-camera workshop over two weeks this February. This is an opportunity to find new avenues for discovery: Working one-on-one we’ll look to bring greater specificity, ease, and present-moment veracity to your work in front of a camera. About the Workshop Director, movement coach, and educator Charlie Oates joins The Actors Center for the first time for a two-day workshop devoted to creativity and physical performance. The workshop will focus on the use of interdisciplinary sources and ensemble collaboration for the development of new work, as well as investigating the body as a critical reservoir of ideas and inspiration in the development of a character. Charlie will guide participants in developing a strategy for researching the details of a character via physical exploration to support their rehearsal process. The intersection of movement and creativity is undeniable. Add great visual art, film, music and literature to the mix and the possibilities are infinite. Sessions run Saturday and Sunday, 11am-2pm. About Charlie Oates For nearly 40 years Charlie Oates taught in actor training programs and universities focusing on the physical training of actors. As a movement coach and fight choreographer, Oates has worked at numerous theaters including La Jolla Playhouse, The Mixed Blood, The Old Globe, Cincinnati Playhouse, San Diego Rep, Chautauqua Theatre Company and the Denver Center Theatre Company. He has been a guest artist in leading actor training programs in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Senegal, Sweden, and China. About the Workshop Actor, singer, and company member Judy Kuhn returns to The Actors Center to lead an acting the song workshop over two weeks this spring. This is a class for the actor who sings or the actor who wants to sing. Participants will work individually on material of their choice focusing on song interpretation and vocal performance techniques such as focus and relationship with an audience or scene partner. We will improvise, work on personalization, deep exploration of text and how to “speak” a song. Although this is not a vocal technique class, Judy will address individual technical concerns and make suggestions about how to approach them. This workshop is open to anyone. No experience singing in front of people is necessary. Sessions run Tuesday and Thursday from 10am-1pm. About Peter Jay Fernandez Peter Jay Fernandez is co-head of Columbia University’s MFA acting program. He previously served as co-head of acting in the graduate theatre program at The New School and has also taught at Yale School of Drama, Sarah Lawrence College, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, the Black Arts Institute, the Brown University/Trinity Repertory MFA Program, and the Berklee College of Music, among others. About Peter Jay Fernandez Peter Jay Fernandez is co-head of Columbia University’s MFA acting program. He previously served as co-head of acting in the graduate theatre program at The New School and has also taught at Yale School of Drama, Sarah Lawrence College, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, the Black Arts Institute, the Brown University/Trinity Repertory MFA Program, and the Berklee College of Music, among others. In this 6 week course, we will work to build on ideas and maybe even early pages that we've started of a first-draft full-length play, and learn ways to engage in a long-form writing process. We'll engage in prompt exercises, read each other's work, and learn how to architect a sustainable and joy-making writing process that springs from skillsets we have built in our acting work.
