About the Workshop Actor and teacher, Welker White, returns to The Actors Center to lead an on-camera workshop over two weeks this February. This is an opportunity to find new avenues for discovery: Working one-on-one we’ll look to bring greater specificity, ease, and present-moment veracity to your work in front of a camera. We’ll examine specific principles in on-camera storytelling, aim to strengthen a relationship to the camera’s lens, and unpack where you might be getting stuck in your process. Additionally, he’s been invited to teach at The Actors Center, Fordham University, Wagner College, Muhlenberg College, Red Bull Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, and The 52nd Street Project. Kevin is a professional actor who for the past twenty seven years has performed in most every facet of the entertainment industry. From Broadway and Off-Broadway to regional theatre. From Lincoln Center to Shakespeare in the Park, Manhattan Theatre Club to Signature. Yale Rep to The Old Globe, The Guthrie to South Coast Rep. He has worked on everything from major studio films to small independents, streaming services to network shows. He also co-created the clown show The New Bozena with Rainn Wilson (The Office), David Costabile (Billions, Lincoln), and Michael Dahlen (Blue Man Group) which ran for five months Off-Broadway, continued regionally, and sold to Twentieth Century Fox. About the Workshop Actor, teacher, and co-founder of The Moving Frame, Damian Young, returns to The Actors Center in February for two Zoom sessions devoted to Screenplay Analysis. Screenplays and Television scripts are blueprints for building visual stories. Do you often find yourself reading a film or tv scene and thinking “there’s not much here” or, on set, asking yourself “why are they shooting it that way?” Our ability to quickly and effectively analyze a scene prior to making specific acting choices ensures we are telling the same story as our collaborators. Damian will guide participants in how to more readily identify genre, story, tone, environment, and emotional stakes of a scene. He will share four distinct scenes from a variety of filmed material. Sessions run Monday and Tuesday, 7:00pm-9:00pm. About Damian Young Damian Young is a career actor with over 100 credited film and television appearances. His work spans the films of Hal Hartley and cult favorite Nickelodeon’s Pete and Pete, to roles in films such as Birdman, Catfight, Wonderstruck, and I Care a Lot. He was a series regular on The Comeback and Ozark, and has recurred on House of Cards, Homeland, and others. Damian has worked extensively in theatre, both on and off-Broadway, as well as regionally. In-Person Workshop RON VAN LIEU: Scene Study 3-Day Workshop Dates & Times Saturday, March 11, 2023 – 11:00am-2:00pm Sunday, March 12, 2023 – 11:00am-2:00pm Monday, March 13, 2023 – 11:00am-2:00pm Actors Theatre Workshop, 145 W 28th St, 3rd Floor This workshop will take place in person. All company members are invited to attend. About the Workshop Revered acting teacher Ron Van Lieu, founding faculty member of The Actors Center and former faculty at NYU, Yale, and Columbia, returns for a 3-day scene study workshop, March 11-13. Ron will be working with company members on scenes of your choice from any 20th- or 21st-century play. Sessions meet 11:00am-2:00pm on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Ron will work on up to three scenes each day. You can sign up either together with a scene partner or as an individual and you will be paired with another individual. When registering, you may indicate your availability and you will have a one-hour time slot assigned for your scene accordingly. You should be off-book and well rehearsed with your material for this workshop. If your schedule does not permit sufficient time to prepare, please sign up for a future workshop instead. In 2004 he was appointed the Lloyd Richards Professor of Acting and Chair of the Acting Program at the Yale School of Drama where he taught until 2017, and where he is now Professor Emeritus. In 2017, Ron was appointed Professor of Professional Practice at the Columbia University School of the Arts Graduate Actor Training Program. Actors who have trained with Ron over the past 50 years have won every major award in the field of theater, acting, and dramatic arts, including the Pulitzer Prize, the Academy Award, Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, Golden Globe, Emmy, and Obie, among others. For a week in March, actor and company member Rebecca Harris will be hosting a series of gatherings for company members to work on writing projects. This time around Rebecca invites you to work with the theme, “Everything Old Is New Again.” She encourages people to pick up and tend to material they started in the past.  The past could mean last month or 10 years ago. Of course, the work doesn’t have to be old… but if you are looking for a launch, consider that your challenge. The idea with the meetups is to support each other in making progress with our work by providing consistent time, space, and community, to use as you see fit. The group will meet every weekday over Zoom March 20-24 and finally in person to share the work on Monday, March 27th, 6:30pm-9:30pm at Alchemical Studios. In each of the daily sessions there will be a quick (optional) check in at the beginning. You can feel free to share an intention for the time, or not. And then work, cameras on or off. We'll reconvene around 10:50am to report back or check out, which is also optional. About the Workshop Actor, singer, and company member Judy Kuhn returns to The Actors Center to lead an acting the song workshop over two weeks this spring. This is a class for the actor who sings or the actor who wants to sing. Participants will work individually on material of their choice focusing on song interpretation and vocal performance techniques such as focus and relationship with an audience or scene partner. We will improvise, work on personalization, deep exploration of text and how to “speak” a song. Although this is not a vocal technique class, Judy will address individual technical concerns and make suggestions about how to approach them. This workshop is open to anyone. No experience singing in front of people is necessary. Sessions run Tuesday and Thursday from 10am-1pm. Through her creative work, she seeks to evoke (and invoke) a sense of playfulness, pathos and poetic possibility. This workshop engages the work and teachings of Tadashi Suzuki combined with Shanga's work both in the classroom and in the profession. Through a finite number of both open and form-based rigorous exercises, the work focuses on the connection of the foot with the floor, building strength in the lower body and expressing via the entire body, not with the face. Strong concentration and physical ease are called upon to do the exercises. When participants push themselves physically—past what they know they can do—they dig deep and access parts of themselves vital in the creative process. When everyone is engaged in the same physical exercises, each person’s individual humanity is revealed. Sessions run Fridays from 10am-1pm. About Shanga Parker Shanga Parker trained as an actor, learned directing, and has taught all kinds of acting. He acts professionally for television, film and theatre. He is an Arts Professor at NYU and Director of the Tisch Summer High School Program. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Columbia MFA Acting Program and at the Iceland University of the Arts. He is a member of SAG/AFTRA and AEA. He has an undergraduate degree from Brown University and an M.F.A. in Acting from UC San Diego. He previously served as co-head of acting in the graduate theatre program at The New School and has also taught at Yale School of Drama, Sarah Lawrence College, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, the Black Arts Institute, the Brown University/Trinity Repertory MFA Program, and the Berklee College of Music, among others. This workshop engages the work and teachings of Tadashi Suzuki combined with Shanga's work both in the classroom and in the profession. Through a finite number of both open and form-based rigorous exercises, the work focuses on the connection of the foot with the floor, building strength in the lower body and expressing via the entire body, not with the face. Strong concentration and physical ease are called upon to do the exercises. When participants push themselves physically—past what they know they can do—they dig deep and access parts of themselves vital in the creative process. When everyone is engaged in the same physical exercises, each person’s individual humanity is revealed. Sessions run Fridays from 10am-1pm. They will then apply this subtle, internal physicality to film work in either short scenes or monologues. Using energetics to ground character and circumstance frees up the mind and helps the actor stay connected in the often fast-paced and barely-rehearsed world of on-camera work. Sessions run Thursdays from 10am-1pm. About Erica Fae Writer, director, performer, and teacher Erica Fae brings radical stories from history to stage and screen. Her first feature To Keep the Light (inspired by women lighthouse keepers in the 1860's) won the Fipresci Prize, among other festival awards, and is currently on Amazon Prime. Her original plays include A Girl Joan, Saved Again and by Him, and Take What Is Yours (with Jill A. Samuels). As actor, she's had recurring roles on HBO's Boardwalk Empire and Doll & Em, Netflix's Partner Track, and has performed in numerous films and plays. Come and write with Migdalia as she teaches you to reclaim your history and use your ancestors and memories to ground your characters in the truth as only you know it—in a voice that is fiercely unique and innately poetic. Over 3 days, participants will write in a group setting, sharing their raw voice and thereby honoring the sacred space created. The method Migdalia will share was passed on to her from her mentor, María Irene Fornés. Sessions run Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 12pm-4pm. About Migdalia Cruz Migdalia Cruz is a Bronx-born, award-winning, multi-platform, playwright, lyricist, translator, and librettist of more than 60 works for stage, radio, film, TV, and podcast, performed in 150 venues in 40 cities in 12 countries. An alumna of New Dramatists, her awards include: NEA, McKnight, NYSCA, TCG/Pew, and she was named the 2013 Helen Merrill Distinguished Playwright.
