In-Person Workshop Welker White: On-Camera Workshop Four Weekday Mornings Over Two Weeks Dates & Times Tuesday, February 7, 2023 – 10:00am-1:00pm ET Friday, February 10, 2023 – 10:00am-1:00pm ET Tuesday, February 14, 2023 – 10:00am-1:00pm ET Friday, February 17, 2023 – 10:00am-1:00pm ET Theaterlab 357 W 36th St., Manhattan, NY 10018 Studio: The Atelier on the 4th Floor This workshop will take place in person. This workshop is open to in-person observers and all company members are invited to attend. Please register via link below to RSVP as an observer. Zoom observing is not possible for this workshop. About the Workshop Actor and teacher, Welker White, returns to The Actors Center to lead an on-camera workshop over two weeks this February. This is an opportunity to find new avenues for discovery: Working one-on-one we’ll look to bring greater specificity, ease, and present-moment veracity to your work in front of a camera. We’ll examine specific principles in on-camera storytelling, aim to strengthen a relationship to the camera’s lens, and unpack where you might be getting stuck in your process. Sessions run Tuesday and Friday from 10am-1pm. She is the founder of The Moving Frame: a unique, a process-oriented approach to the exploration of screen acting. Welker has conducted screen acting intensives in some of the most respected universities and training programs across the U.S. and abroad, including: The Actors Center, NYU Grad Acting, Brown/Trinity MFA, Columbia MFA Acting, ACT, FSU/Asolo Conservatory, U of Iowa MFA Acting, Syracuse University, SMU MFA Acting, Bowdoin College, The Freeman Studio, Montclair State, Emerson MFA Film, Wesleyan University, The Atlantic Conservatory, Dallas Theater Center acting company, Factory Acting Studio Brisbane, 16th Street Actors Studio in Australia. Additionally, Welker has served on the faculty for the National Alliance of Acting Teachers’ Teacher Development Program. Damian will guide participants in how to more readily identify genre, story, tone, environment, and emotional stakes of a scene. He will share four distinct scenes from a variety of filmed material. Sessions run Monday and Tuesday, 7:00pm-9:00pm. About Damian Young Damian Young is a career actor with over 100 credited film and television appearances. His work spans the films of Hal Hartley and cult favorite Nickelodeon’s Pete and Pete, to roles in films such as Birdman, Catfight, Wonderstruck, and I Care a Lot. He was a series regular on The Comeback and Ozark, and has recurred on House of Cards, Homeland, and others. Damian has worked extensively in theatre, both on and off-Broadway, as well as regionally. In 2004 he was appointed the Lloyd Richards Professor of Acting and Chair of the Acting Program at the Yale School of Drama where he taught until 2017, and where he is now Professor Emeritus. In 2017, Ron was appointed Professor of Professional Practice at the Columbia University School of the Arts Graduate Actor Training Program. Actors who have trained with Ron over the past 50 years have won every major award in the field of theater, acting, and dramatic arts, including the Pulitzer Prize, the Academy Award, Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, Golden Globe, Emmy, and Obie, among others. About the Workshop Director, movement coach, and educator Charlie Oates joins The Actors Center for the first time for a two-day workshop devoted to creativity and physical performance. The workshop will focus on the use of interdisciplinary sources and ensemble collaboration for the development of new work, as well as investigating the body as a critical reservoir of ideas and inspiration in the development of a character. Charlie will guide participants in developing a strategy for researching the details of a character via physical exploration to support their rehearsal process. The intersection of movement and creativity is undeniable. Add great visual art, film, music and literature to the mix and the possibilities are infinite. Sessions run Saturday and Sunday, 11am-2pm. About Charlie Oates For nearly 40 years Charlie Oates taught in actor training programs and universities focusing on the physical training of actors. The majority of his career was spent at the University of California, San Diego where he served for several years as department chair and received the Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award in 2016. As a movement coach and fight choreographer, Oates has worked at numerous theaters including La Jolla Playhouse, The Mixed Blood, The Old Globe, Cincinnati Playhouse, San Diego Rep, Chautauqua Theatre Company and the Denver Center Theatre Company. He has been a guest artist in leading actor training programs in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Senegal, Sweden, and China. His years as a creator and performer of original physical theatre works, director and street performer have taken him across North America, the Pacific and Europe. His original work includes Truck Dog  (with James Donlon), which toured the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Ireland and with Czech Performers, Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic; Staying Married (with Moira Keefe) which played throughout the U.S., Canada, New Zealand and Ireland and his solo work Man Overboard, also seen internationally. About the Workshop Actor, singer, and company member Judy Kuhn returns to The Actors Center to lead an acting the song workshop over two weeks this spring. This is a class for the actor who sings or the actor who wants to sing. Participants will work individually on material of their choice focusing on song interpretation and vocal performance techniques such as focus and relationship with an audience or scene partner. We will improvise, work on personalization, deep exploration of text and how to “speak” a song. Although this is not a vocal technique class, Judy will address individual technical concerns and make suggestions about how to approach them. This workshop is open to anyone. No experience singing in front of people is necessary. Sessions run Tuesday and Thursday from 10am-1pm. About Peter Jay Fernandez Peter Jay Fernandez is co-head of Columbia University’s MFA acting program. He previously served as co-head of acting in the graduate theatre program at The New School and has also taught at Yale School of Drama, Sarah Lawrence College, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, the Black Arts Institute, the Brown University/Trinity Repertory MFA Program, and the Berklee College of Music, among others. About Peter Jay Fernandez Peter Jay Fernandez is co-head of Columbia University’s MFA acting program. This workshop engages the work and teachings of Tadashi Suzuki combined with Shanga's work both in the classroom and in the profession. Through a finite number of both open and form-based rigorous exercises, the work focuses on the connection of the foot with the floor, building strength in the lower body and expressing via the entire body, not with the face. Strong concentration and physical ease are called upon to do the exercises. When participants push themselves physically—past what they know they can do—they dig deep and access parts of themselves vital in the creative process. When everyone is engaged in the same physical exercises, each person’s individual humanity is revealed. Sessions run Fridays from 10am-1pm. They will then apply this subtle, internal physicality to film work in either short scenes or monologues. Using energetics to ground character and circumstance frees up the mind and helps the actor stay connected in the often fast-paced and barely-rehearsed world of on-camera work. Sessions run Thursdays from 10am-1pm. About Erica Fae Writer, director, performer, and teacher Erica Fae brings radical stories from history to stage and screen. Her first feature To Keep the Light (inspired by women lighthouse keepers in the 1860's) won the Fipresci Prize, among other festival awards, and is currently on Amazon Prime. Her original plays include A Girl Joan, Saved Again and by Him, and Take What Is Yours (with Jill A. Samuels). Come and write with Migdalia as she teaches you to reclaim your history and use your ancestors and memories to ground your characters in the truth as only you know it—in a voice that is fiercely unique and innately poetic. Over 3 days, participants will write in a group setting, sharing their raw voice and thereby honoring the sacred space created. Come and write with Migdalia as she teaches you to reclaim your history and use your ancestors and memories to ground your characters in the truth as only you know it—in a voice that is fiercely unique and innately poetic. Over 3 days, participants will write in a group setting, sharing their raw voice and thereby honoring the sacred space created. About the Workshop Acting coach, director, and casting director, Heidi Miami Marshall, returns to The Actors Center for four days facilitating a deep dive look at the audition process, beyond the technical or “techniques.” From Heidi: “This group always inspires me with your commitment and (already) well-honed talents. Just because there's a pending strike, we don't stop. We keep digging in so that you fall (deeper) in love with the process of auditioning and auditioning. In this 6 week course, we will work to build on ideas and maybe even early pages that we've started of a first-draft full-length play, and learn ways to engage in a long-form writing process. We'll engage in prompt exercises, read each other's work, and learn how to architect a sustainable and joy-making writing process that springs from skillsets we have built in our acting work. They will then apply this subtle, internal physicality to film work in either short scenes or monologues. Using energetics to ground character and circumstance frees up the mind and helps the actor stay connected in the often fast-paced and barely-rehearsed world of on-camera work. Sessions run Thursdays from 10am-1pm. About Erica Fae Writer, director, performer, and teacher Erica Fae brings radical stories from history to stage and screen. Her first feature To Keep the Light (inspired by women lighthouse keepers in the 1860's) won the Fipresci Prize, among other festival awards, and is currently on Amazon Prime. Her original plays include A Girl Joan, Saved Again and by Him, and Take What Is Yours (with Jill A. Samuels). As actor, she's had recurring roles on HBO's Boardwalk Empire and Doll & Em, Netflix's Partner Track, and has performed in numerous films and plays.
