Zoom Workshop DAMIAN YOUNG: Screenplay Analysis Two Weekday Evenings Dates & Times Monday, February 20, 2023 – 7:00pm-9:00pm Tuesday, February 21, 2023 – 7:00pm-9:00pm Online on Zoom This workshop is open to all company members to attend. About the Workshop Actor, teacher, and co-founder of The Moving Frame, Damian Young, returns to The Actors Center in February for two Zoom sessions devoted to Screenplay Analysis. Screenplays and Television scripts are blueprints for building visual stories. Do you often find yourself reading a film or tv scene and thinking “there’s not much here” or, on set, asking yourself “why are they shooting it that way?” Our ability to quickly and effectively analyze a scene prior to making specific acting choices ensures we are telling the same story as our collaborators. Damian will guide participants in how to more readily identify genre, story, tone, environment, and emotional stakes of a scene. He will share four distinct scenes from a variety of filmed material. Sessions run Monday and Tuesday, 7:00pm-9:00pm. About Damian Young Damian Young is a career actor with over 100 credited film and television appearances. His work spans the films of Hal Hartley and cult favorite Nickelodeon’s Pete and Pete, to roles in films such as Birdman, Catfight, Wonderstruck, and I Care a Lot. He was a series regular on The Comeback and Ozark, and has recurred on House of Cards, Homeland, and others. Damian has worked extensively in theatre, both on and off-Broadway, as well as regionally. About the Workshop Revered acting teacher Ron Van Lieu, founding faculty member of The Actors Center and former faculty at NYU, Yale, and Columbia, returns for a 3-day scene study workshop, March 11-13. Ron will be working with company members on scenes of your choice from any 20th- or 21st-century play. Sessions meet 11:00am-2:00pm on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Ron will work on up to three scenes each day. You can sign up either together with a scene partner or as an individual and you will be paired with another individual. When registering, you may indicate your availability and you will have a one-hour time slot assigned for your scene accordingly. In 2004 he was appointed the Lloyd Richards Professor of Acting and Chair of the Acting Program at the Yale School of Drama where he taught until 2017, and where he is now Professor Emeritus. In 2017, Ron was appointed Professor of Professional Practice at the Columbia University School of the Arts Graduate Actor Training Program. Actors who have trained with Ron over the past 50 years have won every major award in the field of theater, acting, and dramatic arts, including the Pulitzer Prize, the Academy Award, Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, Golden Globe, Emmy, and Obie, among others. IN-PERSON WORKSHOP Charlie Oates: Creativity & Physical Performance 2-Day Workshop Dates & Times Saturday, March 18, 2023 – 11:00am-2:00pm Sunday, March 19, 2023 – 11:00am-2:00pm Alchemical Studios, 50 West 17th Street, 12th floor This workshop will take place in person. About the Workshop Director, movement coach, and educator Charlie Oates joins The Actors Center for the first time for a two-day workshop devoted to creativity and physical performance. The workshop will focus on the use of interdisciplinary sources and ensemble collaboration for the development of new work, as well as investigating the body as a critical reservoir of ideas and inspiration in the development of a character. Charlie will guide participants in developing a strategy for researching the details of a character via physical exploration to support their rehearsal process. The intersection of movement and creativity is undeniable. Add great visual art, film, music and literature to the mix and the possibilities are infinite. Sessions run Saturday and Sunday, 11am-2pm. About Charlie Oates For nearly 40 years Charlie Oates taught in actor training programs and universities focusing on the physical training of actors. The majority of his career was spent at the University of California, San Diego where he served for several years as department chair and received the Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award in 2016. As a movement coach and fight choreographer, Oates has worked at numerous theaters including La Jolla Playhouse, The Mixed Blood, The Old Globe, Cincinnati Playhouse, San Diego Rep, Chautauqua Theatre Company and the Denver Center Theatre Company. He has been a guest artist in leading actor training programs in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Senegal, Sweden, and China. His years as a creator and performer of original physical theatre works, director and street performer have taken him across North America, the Pacific and Europe. His original work includes Truck Dog  (with James Donlon), which toured the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Ireland and with Czech Performers, Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic; Staying Married (with Moira Keefe) which played throughout the U.S., Canada, New Zealand and Ireland and his solo work Man Overboard, also seen internationally. About the Workshop Actor-creator, director, and educator, Justine Williams, returns to The Actors Center to lead a games workshop over two weeks in March. What if acting were just play, and the key to aliveness and full magnificence on stage was primarily a process of rediscovering and developing playful impulses with, for and through an audience? Over four sessions, participants will reconnect with their unique pleasure in playing, and explore some principles of play to support approaching character and text, and in bringing performance worlds to life. Sessions run Monday and Wednesday from 10am-1pm. About Justine Williams Justine Wolf Williams is an actor-creator, director and educator working across performance and film. Through her creative work, she seeks to evoke (and invoke) a sense of playfulness, pathos and poetic possibility. Her performance work has been developed/presented at venues ranging from seedy backroom bars to NY’s snazziest stages and artistic institutions, and her cinematic work has premiered at New Directors | New Films, Woodstock Film Festival, Maryland Film Festival, Rotterdam International Film Festival, and more. Since 2013, she’s been on faculty at the David Geffen School of Drama (YSD) where she teaches play, creative process and collaborative strategies, and facilitates the development of new plays. What if acting were just play, and the key to aliveness and full magnificence on stage was primarily a process of rediscovering and developing playful impulses with, for and through an audience? Over four sessions, participants will reconnect with their unique pleasure in playing, and explore some principles of play to support approaching character and text, and in bringing performance worlds to life. Sessions run Monday and Wednesday from 10am-1pm. About Justine Williams Justine Wolf Williams is an actor-creator, director and educator working across performance and film. Through her creative work, she seeks to evoke (and invoke) a sense of playfulness, pathos and poetic possibility. Her performance work has been developed/presented at venues ranging from seedy backroom bars to NY’s snazziest stages and artistic institutions, and her cinematic work has premiered at New Directors | New Films, Woodstock Film Festival, Maryland Film Festival, Rotterdam International Film Festival, and more. Since 2013, she’s been on faculty at the David Geffen School of Drama (YSD) where she teaches play, creative process and collaborative strategies, and facilitates the development of new plays. Open to observers, all company members are invited to attend. About the Workshop Actor, singer, and company member Judy Kuhn returns to The Actors Center to lead an acting the song workshop over two weeks this spring. This is a class for the actor who sings or the actor who wants to sing. Participants will work individually on material of their choice focusing on song interpretation and vocal performance techniques such as focus and relationship with an audience or scene partner. We will improvise, work on personalization, deep exploration of text and how to “speak” a song. Although this is not a vocal technique class, Judy will address individual technical concerns and make suggestions about how to approach them. This workshop is open to anyone. No experience singing in front of people is necessary. Sessions run Tuesday and Thursday from 10am-1pm. About Judy Kuhn Judy Kuhn is a multiple Tony, Olivier and Grammy Award nominee best known for her work on Broadway in such shows as Fun Home, She Loves Me, Chess, and Les Misérables. Other Bway includes Fiddler on the Roof, Richard Nelson’s Two Shakespearean Actors, Alan Menken and Tim Rice’s King David and the Charles Strouse/Stephen Schwartz musical Rags. They will then apply this subtle, internal physicality to film work in either short scenes or monologues. Using energetics to ground character and circumstance frees up the mind and helps the actor stay connected in the often fast-paced and barely-rehearsed world of on-camera work. Come and write with Migdalia as she teaches you to reclaim your history and use your ancestors and memories to ground your characters in the truth as only you know it—in a voice that is fiercely unique and innately poetic. Over 3 days, participants will write in a group setting, sharing their raw voice and thereby honoring the sacred space created. About Migdalia Cruz Migdalia Cruz is a Bronx-born, award-winning, multi-platform, playwright, lyricist, translator, and librettist of more than 60 works for stage, radio, film, TV, and podcast, performed in 150 venues in 40 cities in 12 countries. An alumna of New Dramatists, her awards include: NEA, McKnight, NYSCA, TCG/Pew, and she was named the 2013 Helen Merrill Distinguished Playwright. María Irene Fornés nurtured her at INTAR and Latino Chicago gave her a home as their playwright-in residence. She is a master teacher of playwriting with the Fornés Institute, various universities, and professional theater schools. They will then apply this subtle, internal physicality to film work in either short scenes or monologues. Using energetics to ground character and circumstance frees up the mind and helps the actor stay connected in the often fast-paced and barely-rehearsed world of on-camera work. Sessions run Thursdays from 10am-1pm. About Erica Fae Writer, director, performer, and teacher Erica Fae brings radical stories from history to stage and screen. Her first feature To Keep the Light (inspired by women lighthouse keepers in the 1860's) won the Fipresci Prize, among other festival awards, and is currently on Amazon Prime. Her original plays include A Girl Joan, Saved Again and by Him, and Take What Is Yours (with Jill A. Samuels).
