  • Evan Yionoulis: The Late Plays of Ibsen (6/3-6/5)

Evan Yionoulis: The Late Plays of Ibsen (6/3-6/5)

In-Person Workshop EVAN YIONOULIS: The Late Plays of Ibsen Three Weekdays Dates & Times Monday, June 3, 2024 – 10:00am-1:00pm, 2:00pm-5:00pm Tuesday, June 4, 2024 – 10:00am-2:00pm Wednesday, June 5, 2024 – 10:00am-2:00pm Houghton Hall, 22 East 30th Street, 2nd Floor Ballroom This workshop is open to observers and all company members are invited to attend. About the Workshop Acclaimed director, acting teacher, and head of Juilliard's Drama Division, Evan Yionoulis, returns to The Actors Center in June for three days devoted to the work of Henrik Ibsen. Evan will guide an exploration of three of Ibsen's later plays, The Lady From the Sea, The Master Builder, and Little Eyolf, which venture beyond the social constraints of earlier works such as A Doll’s House and Hedda Gabler, to landscapes with greater, unseen forces at play. We'll explore the moment-to-moment demands of Ibsen’s dialogue and examine the actor’s work in arriving at character needs that meet the size of the world of these plays. Together in pairs, participants will prepare a scene from one of the three plays and will have the opportunity to work twice over the workshop. Sessions run Monday from 10am-5pm, and Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am-2pm. You can sign up either together with a partner or as an individual and you will be paired with another individual. You do not need to know what scene you're working on before signing up. Please reach out to Alex for copies of the plays, if needed. Any translation is okay—Evan likes the Rolf Fjelde—as long as it is not an adaption, but truly a translation. You should be as close to off-book as possible with your material for this workshop. If your schedule does not permit sufficient time to prepare, please sign up for a future workshop instead. If you are looking for a scene partner, you may post in the comments thread, or you can also find contact information for all members in the member directory. About Evan Yionoulis Evan Yionoulis, an Obie award-winning director and nationally recognized teacher of acting, is Juilliard’s Richard Rodgers dean and director of the Drama Division. Previously, she spent 20 years on the faculty of Yale School of Drama, where she was a professor in the practice of acting and directing and Lloyd Richards chair of the department of acting from 1998 to 2003. She has directed new plays and classics in New York, across the country,...

  • Michele Shay: Cultivating Empathy (6/7)

In-Person Workshop MICHELE SHAY: Cultivating Empathy During Trying Times What does it mean to be an Actor when so much is needed? End of Season Workshop Dates & Times Friday, June 7, 2024 – 11:00am-4:00pm (with lunch break) Houghton Hall, 22 East 30th Street, 2nd Floor Ballroom About the Workshop Distinguished actor and Professor and Chair of Performance at USC School of Dramatic Arts, Michele Shay, returns to The Actors Center on Friday, June 7th to close out our 2023-24 season. Michele will facilitate a one-day convening—part communal conversation, part artist consciousness raising, and part acting workshop—exploring our role and responsibilities as artists in response to the current global climate. What can we do as storytellers to amplify our collective presence and inspire greater empathy between people? How do we cultivate a resistance of consciousness in the face of pervasive disconnection? Where do doubts about truth originate and how do we get people to take truth seriously? How can we unpack what motivates people, so we can pave the way for a more harmonious existence on this planet? Join us as we reflect on and live amid these questions. We are in tumultuous and judgmental times, but during such periods of upheaval, there is always incredible opportunity for artists to step forward and remind us who we can be as human beings. About Michele Shay Michele Shay—actress, director, educator, and noted interpreter of the works of playwright August Wilson—is perhaps best known for her Tony Award-nominated performance as Louise in August Wilson’s Seven Guitars. She is a veteran actress who has graced stages on and off-Broadway, television and film, and regional theaters across the country. Michele has portrayed Aunt Ester in Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean in productions directed by Kenny Leon, Phylicia Rashad and Ruben Santiago-Hudson; and Mame Wilks in the world premiere of Wilson’s Radio Golf, directed by Timothy Douglas at Yale Rep. Michele has directed seven plays in the Cycle including Fences, Gem of the Ocean, Seven Guitars, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, and The Piano Lesson (with Tonya Pinkins, Montae Russell and Glynn Turman for CCAP at the Broad Theatre). Michele participated with a host of other longtime August Wilson collaborators in directing Two Trains and King Hedley II for the NY Public Radio recordings of August Wilson’s American Century Cycle at The Greene Space. She is Professor of Theatre Practice in Acting and Chair of...

Of the writing programming offered in recent years, I’d also like to hear what you found effective, or what prevented you from taking part as much as you’d like. If you can’t make the meeting, you can also send thoughts via email. Warmly, Alex RSVP Comments/Queries

Throughout, Leigh will offer insights to support actors in being present, listening, trusting connection, and allowing a great story to emerge, with the primary aim that participants leave knowing themselves better as artists. Sessions run 1:00pm-5:30pm. Enrollment is limited to 14 actors. You can sign up either together with a scene partner or as an individual to be paired with another individual. Participants are strongly encouraged to choose material that is new to them, and neither rehearse nor memorize before the first session. If you prefer, Leigh can assign you material or offer suggestions. Occasional conflicts can be accommodated. If you are looking for a scene partner, you may post in the comments thread, or you can also find contact information for all members in the member directory. About the Workshop Acclaimed acting coach Ted Sluberski joins The Actors Center for the first time for four Friday mornings devoted to exploring performance on-camera. Ted’s workshops are based on the question, “What do you want to do with this role?” and there is a great deal to consider to effectively answer that question. Ted will collaborate with actors to mine every detail in a script, to be used to build a solid scene, performance, or audition. Once all the analysis is done, Ted will guide participants in exploring what they want to accomplish artistically and how they can collaborate with any project to serve the world of the script, the story, the visual, and most importantly the character, so that their artistic signature is on the role whether it is a guest, recurring, or series regular. Here you will find a supportive, safe virtual space where artists in our company bring their stories, concerns, questions, recommendations, and inspirations in a free-wheeling but facilitated discussion. With no set agenda, we delve into whatever is of interest or concern in any given week. We explore what it means to be an actor and what place our art holds in the world.  People suggest balm for body and soul while walking hand-in-hand along the actor’s way. About the Series Company CoLabs are a series at The Actors Center that offer a framework for collaborative explorations and community programming among company members. About the Workshop Multidisciplinary artist and teacher Budi Miller and dramaturg Taylor Barfield join The Actors Center for the first time for a 4-day intensive where the power of mask becomes a focal point for deep embodiment of a role and scene study. Training in masks requires us to find the internal power of our most creative selves. Masks unlock the deep knowledge of the physical, emotional, and intuitive body, which directly interacts with taksu—a Balinese concept of performance energy marking the divine moment of manifestation. Understand its universal presence and its ability to transcend cultures and become a source of inspiration for your craft. Participants will then have the opportunity to work from the intersection of their own culture on scenes, using a vast network of scripts that Taylor has assembled from around the world. The process aims to enable participants to explore and celebrate their cultural heritage while pushing them in their training, selecting scenes with a focus on cultural nuance and dramatic challenge. Participants will experience a visceral awareness of character transformation and explore aspects of movement, improvisation, ensemble training, character embodiment, and spiritual practice for actors, fostering genuine artistic and spiritual growth. About Budi Miller Dr. Budi Miller is the former Head of Acting at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne (UoM), Australia (the first black person to hold this position at one of the top 3 drama schools in Australia). He is the Co-Artistic Director of The Theatre of Others; a Lead Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework, a certified integrative studies practitioner; and an UNESCO designated master teacher of mask work. He teaches acting through Balinese Performing Art Training (BPAT) with Mask Work, Fitzmaurice Voicework, Michael Chekhov, Clown, PEM, Viewpoints, and Grotowski.
