In-Person Workshop FABIO TAVARES: Going Back to Go Forward, Activating the Back Body Four Day Workshop, Thursday and Friday Afternoons Dates & Times Thursday, May 2, 2024 – 1:00pm-4:00pm Friday, May 3, 2024 – 1:00pm-4:00pm Thursday, May 9, 2024 – 1:00pm-4:00pm Friday, May 10, 2024 – 1:00pm-4:00pm Houghton Hall, 22 East 30th Street, Jefferson Studio Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate observers for this workshop. About the Workshop Interdisciplinary artist and teacher Fabio Tavares returns to The Actors Center in May for a series of four sessions devoted to the principles of the Alexander Technique in action. Alexander’s own quest began as an attempt to solve his vocal issues. Later on he realized that body, mind, and breath were all part of the same complex organism, which he called “self”.  In order to look at voice and breath we need to first understand how the body works. In this workshop, Fabio will guide an exploration of ideas and activities to encourage the expansion of the back—lengthening of the spine and widening of the back ribs—to produce sound and movement with more ease and flow. Whether on stage or on set, the principles are the same: A longer and wider back will enable more support, strength, and freedom. In the latter part of each session, participants will be invited to bring in film or TV sides or text to work from, exploring one-on-one adjustments in the work. Sessions run Thursdays and Fridays from 1pm-4pm. About Fabio Tavares Fabio Tavares (he/him) is a Brazilian artist who’s been obsessed with the human body in action from a very young age. He started off as a competitive gymnast before running away to join the circus at the age of 15 where he got his first professional job as an acrobat. Fabio moved to New York in 1999 where he’s been dancing, teaching and making art since. He has collaborated and performed with Yvonne Meyer, chameckilerner, Miguel Gutierrez, Fisherspooner, Noemie Lafrance, Luis Lara Malvacías, Jeniffer Monson, Circus Amok, John Heginbotham, Laurie Anderson,The Dazzle Dancers, The Daisy Spurs, Stanley Love, Anna Kohler, Anne Bogart and the acclaimed SITI Company. In-Person Workshop EVAN YIONOULIS: The Late Plays of Ibsen Three Weekdays Dates & Times Monday, June 3, 2024 – 10:00am-1:00pm, 2:00pm-5:00pm Tuesday, June 4, 2024 – 10:00am-2:00pm Wednesday, June 5, 2024 – 10:00am-2:00pm Houghton Hall, 22 East 30th Street, 2nd Floor Ballroom This workshop is open to observers and all company members are invited to attend. About the Workshop Acclaimed director, acting teacher, and head of Juilliard's Drama Division, Evan Yionoulis, returns to The Actors Center in June for three days devoted to the work of Henrik Ibsen. Evan will guide an exploration of three of Ibsen's later plays, The Lady From the Sea, The Master Builder, and Little Eyolf, which venture beyond the social constraints of earlier works such as A Doll’s House and Hedda Gabler, to landscapes with greater, unseen forces at play. We'll explore the moment-to-moment demands of Ibsen’s dialogue and examine the actor’s work in arriving at character needs that meet the size of the world of these plays. Together in pairs, participants will prepare a scene from one of the three plays and will have the opportunity to work twice over the workshop. Sessions run Monday from 10am-5pm, and Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am-2pm. You can sign up either together with a partner or as an individual and you will be paired with another individual. You do not need to know what scene you're working on before signing up. Please reach out to Alex for copies of the plays, if needed. Any translation is okay—Evan likes the Rolf Fjelde—as long as it is not an adaption, but truly a translation. About the Workshop Acclaimed actor and teacher Patrick Page joins The Actors Center for the first time for a two-day workshop devoted to exploring the language of Shakespeare. Shakespeare's plays were written for a group of highly skilled players with a shared understanding of the principles that brought his words to life. Patrick will offer participants a practical method for approaching Shakespearean text, merging the classical techniques of rhetoric, meter, imagery, and sound with our modern system, grounded in identifying intentions, targets, and actions, and then personalizing the material to make it truthful. Participants are asked to bring in a monologue of their choice to work from and will leave the workshop with a concrete system that can be applied and practiced over time. Sessions run 1pm-5:30pm on Friday and Saturday afternoon. About Patrick Page Patrick Page has been called “One of America’s greatest classical actors” by the Wall Street Journal. His one-man show All the Devils Are Here—How Shakespeare Invented the Villain recently played to six months of sold-out houses Off-Broadway, garnering the Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Solo Performance. The show will play The Guthrie Theatre for two months this Fall, before beginning a national and world tour. He is an Associate Artist of The Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington DC, where his recent performance as King Lear was called “The best in my lifetime” by Washington Post critic Peter Marks, becoming the highest grossing Shakespeare in that theatre’s history. Other roles at STC include Iago (Helen Hayes Award), Coriolanus (Emery Battis Award), Claudius, Prospero, and Macbeth. Patrick is also an Associate Artist of The Old Globe Theatre, where his roles include Cyrano (Craig Noel Award) and Malvolio. Sessions run Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, 2:00pm-5:00pm. About Kathleen McNenny Kathleen is a native of Montana. She holds a BFA from University of Montana and a diploma from The Juilliard School of Drama. She studied mask with Pierre Lefebvre and Mina Yakim. She currently teaches physical acting using the tool of the mask at The Juilliard School, The Bill Esper Studios, The Lucid Body House, and The Actors Center, and previously at Rutgers, UCSD, Cap21 as well as other studios. She has taught at Juilliard for over 20 years, helping actors make the transition from school into the business. About the Workshop Acclaimed acting coach Ted Sluberski joins The Actors Center for the first time for four Friday mornings devoted to exploring performance on-camera. Ted’s workshops are based on the question, “What do you want to do with this role?” and there is a great deal to consider to effectively answer that question. Regardless of where you are on the call sheet, when the camera is on you, you’re #1 in the shot, so what do you want to do with that opportunity? Ted will collaborate with actors to mine every detail in a script, to be used to build a solid scene, performance, or audition. Once all the analysis is done, Ted will guide participants in exploring what they want to accomplish artistically and how they can collaborate with any project to serve the world of the script, the story, the visual, and most importantly the character, so that their artistic signature is on the role whether it is a guest, recurring, or series regular. Participants will each work twice over the four weeks. Sessions run Friday mornings 10:00am-1:00pm. About Ted Sluberski For the past 20 years Ted Sluberski has worked as an acting coach primarily in film and television. He has collaborated with actors in every genre from Studio features to Indie film and Streaming series to network series. The same question always starts the work: “What do you want to do with the role?” Prior to full-time coaching Ted worked at ICM, then was a Casting Director for 14 years, followed by running the Actors and Directors Workshops at the Williamstown Theatre Festival.
