About the Workshop Acclaimed actor and teacher Patrick Page joins The Actors Center for the first time for a two-day workshop devoted to exploring the language of Shakespeare. Shakespeare's plays were written for a group of highly skilled players with a shared understanding of the principles that brought his words to life. Patrick will offer participants a practical method for approaching Shakespearean text, merging the classical techniques of rhetoric, meter, imagery, and sound with our modern system, grounded in identifying intentions, targets, and actions, and then personalizing the material to make it truthful. Participants are asked to bring in a monologue of their choice to work from and will leave the workshop with a concrete system that can be applied and practiced over time. Sessions run 1pm-5:30pm on Friday and Saturday afternoon. About Patrick Page Patrick Page has been called “One of America’s greatest classical actors” by the Wall Street Journal. His one-man show All the Devils Are Here—How Shakespeare Invented the Villain recently played to six months of sold-out houses Off-Broadway, garnering the Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Solo Performance. The show will play The Guthrie Theatre for two months this Fall, before beginning a national and world tour. He is an Associate Artist of The Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington DC, where his recent performance as King Lear was called “The best in my lifetime” by Washington Post critic Peter Marks, becoming the highest grossing Shakespeare in that theatre’s history. Other roles at STC include Iago (Helen Hayes Award), Coriolanus (Emery Battis Award), Claudius, Prospero, and Macbeth. Kathleen approaches acting from the psychophysical, meaning the body is wiser than the brain. When we move, the body and the internal world are awakened, firing up the imagination and the feeling world. The mask is the catalyst, creating a sense of safety that allows for deep transformation. The mask encourages the imaginative body and voice to come play. In a time where self-taping alone in our rooms is the norm, it is joyful to dive into rooms and exchange energy with others. Sessions run Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, 2:00pm-5:00pm. About Kathleen McNenny Kathleen is a native of Montana. She holds a BFA from University of Montana and a diploma from The Juilliard School of Drama. She studied mask with Pierre Lefebvre and Mina Yakim. She currently teaches physical acting using the tool of the mask at The Juilliard School, The Bill Esper Studios, The Lucid Body House, and The Actors Center, and previously at Rutgers, UCSD, Cap21 as well as other studios. She has taught at Juilliard for over 20 years, helping actors make the transition from school into the business. In-Person Workshop LEIGH KILTON-SMITH: Scene Study (Revised Dates) 4 Tuesday & Thursday Afternoons Dates & Times Tuesday, October 8, 2024 – 1:00pm-5:30pm Thursday, October 10, 2024 – 1:00pm-5:30pm Tuesday, October 15, 2024 – 1:00pm-5:30pm Thursday, October 17, 2024 – 1:00pm-5:30pm Actors Theatre Workshop, 145 West 28th Street, 3rd Floor This workshop is open to in-person observers and all company members are invited to attend. Observers may attend for any portion of each session. About the Workshop Teacher and onset acting coach Leigh Kilton-Smith returns to The Actors Center for a workshop devoted to scene study. Leigh will work with company members on scenes from any 20th- or 21st century play of their choosing. Every scene will work each week, beginning with a first encounter with the text and a particular approach to the memorization process. Throughout, Leigh will offer insights to support actors in being present, listening, trusting connection, and allowing a great story to emerge, with the primary aim that participants leave knowing themselves better as artists. Sessions run Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:00pm-5:30pm, over two weeks. Enrollment is limited to 14 actors. You can sign up either together with a scene partner or as an individual to be paired with another individual. Participants are strongly encouraged to choose material that is new to them, and neither rehearse nor memorize before the first session. If you prefer, Leigh can assign you material or offer suggestions. Occasional conflicts can be accommodated. Ted’s workshops are based on the question, “What do you want to do with this role?” and there is a great deal to consider to effectively answer that question. Regardless of where you are on the call sheet, when the camera is on you, you’re #1 in the shot, so what do you want to do with that opportunity? Ted will collaborate with actors to mine every detail in a script, to be used to build a solid scene, performance, or audition. Once all the analysis is done, Ted will guide participants in exploring what they want to accomplish artistically and how they can collaborate with any project to serve the world of the script, the story, the visual, and most importantly the character, so that their artistic signature is on the role whether it is a guest, recurring, or series regular. About the Workshop Multidisciplinary artist and teacher Budi Miller and dramaturg Taylor Barfield join The Actors Center for the first time for a 4-day intensive where the power of mask becomes a focal point for deep embodiment of a role and scene study. Training in masks requires us to find the internal power of our most creative selves. Masks unlock the deep knowledge of the physical, emotional, and intuitive body, which directly interacts with taksu—a Balinese concept of performance energy marking the divine moment of manifestation. Understand its universal presence and its ability to transcend cultures and become a source of inspiration for your craft. Participants will then have the opportunity to work from the intersection of their own culture on scenes, using a vast network of scripts that Taylor has assembled from around the world. The process aims to enable participants to explore and celebrate their cultural heritage while pushing them in their training, selecting scenes with a focus on cultural nuance and dramatic challenge. Participants will experience a visceral awareness of character transformation and explore aspects of movement, improvisation, ensemble training, character embodiment, and spiritual practice for actors, fostering genuine artistic and spiritual growth. About Budi Miller Dr. Budi Miller is the former Head of Acting at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne (UoM), Australia (the first black person to hold this position at one of the top 3 drama schools in Australia). He is the Co-Artistic Director of The Theatre of Others; a Lead Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework, a certified integrative studies practitioner; and an UNESCO designated master teacher of mask work. He teaches acting through Balinese Performing Art Training (BPAT) with Mask Work, Fitzmaurice Voicework, Michael Chekhov, Clown, PEM, Viewpoints, and Grotowski. About the Workshop Teacher and onset acting coach Leigh Kilton-Smith returns to The Actors Center for four consecutive Thursday afternoons devoted to scene study. Leigh will work with company members on scenes from any 20th- or 21st century play of their choosing. Every scene will work each week, beginning with a first encounter with the text and a particular approach to the memorization process. Throughout, Leigh will offer insights to support actors in being present, listening, trusting connection, and allowing a great story to emerge, with the primary aim that participants leave knowing themselves better as artists. Sessions run 1:00pm-5:30pm. Enrollment is limited to 14 actors. You can sign up either together with a scene partner or as an individual to be paired with another individual. About the Workshop Acclaimed acting coach Ted Sluberski joins The Actors Center for the first time for four Friday mornings devoted to exploring performance on-camera. Ted’s workshops are based on the question, “What do you want to do with this role?” and there is a great deal to consider to effectively answer that question. Regardless of where you are on the call sheet, when the camera is on you, you’re #1 in the shot, so what do you want to do with that opportunity? Ted will collaborate with actors to mine every detail in a script, to be used to build a solid scene, performance, or audition. Once all the analysis is done, Ted will guide participants in exploring what they want to accomplish artistically and how they can collaborate with any project to serve the world of the script, the story, the visual, and most importantly the character, so that their artistic signature is on the role whether it is a guest, recurring, or series regular. Through body-focused exercises designed to expand emotional range and physically access six key emotions, Sarah will guide actors in learning to come in and out of intense emotional states quickly, safely, and repeatably without needing to refer to traumatic memories or personal story. Participants will learn to organically transition through emotions or combine emotions to cultivate complexity, depth, and nuance in their work, as well as explore how to apply emotion into text work. Beyond the stage and screen, this holistic approach helps to reframe one's understanding of emotions to not only refine artistic skills, but manage auditions and stage-fright, develop emotional intelligence, and improve wellbeing. About Raja Feather Kelly Raja Feather Kelly is a choreographer and director, and the Artistic Director of the feath3r theory (TF3T), a Brooklyn-based dance-theatre-media company that he founded in 2009. Frequent collaborators include Lileana Blain-Cruz, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Sarah Benson, and Michael R. Jackson. About Ron Van Lieu Ron Van Lieu was the Master Teacher of Acting and eventually Chair of the NYU Graduate Acting Program where he taught from 1975 to 2004. In 2004 he was appointed the Lloyd Richards Professor of Acting and Chair of the Acting Program at the Yale School of Drama where he taught until 2017, and where he is now Professor Emeritus. In 2017, Ron was appointed Professor of Professional Practice at the Columbia University School of the Arts Graduate Actor Training Program. In-Person Workshop RON VAN LIEU: Tennessee Williams Weekend Workshop Dates & Times Saturday, November 16, 2024 – 11:00am-2:00pm Sunday, November 17, 2024 – 11:00am-2:00pm Monday, November 18, 2024 – 10:00am-1:00pm Sat/Mon Location: Houghton Hall, 22 East 30th Street, 2nd Floor Ballroom Sun Location: Actors Theatre Workshop, 145 West 28th Street, 3rd Floor This workshop is open to observers and all company members are invited to attend. About the Workshop Revered acting teacher Ron Van Lieu, founding faculty member of The Actors Center and former faculty at NYU, Yale, and Columbia, returns for three days of scene study exploring the plays of Tennessee Williams. Participants are encouraged to play across type and gender if they desire. Sessions meet 11:00am-2:00pm on Saturday and Sunday, and 10:00am-1:00pm on Monday. Ron will work on up to three scenes each day. You can sign up either together with a scene partner or as an individual and you will be paired with another individual. When registering, you may indicate your availability and you will have a one-hour time slot assigned for your scene accordingly. You should be off-book and well rehearsed with your material for this workshop. If your schedule does not permit sufficient time to prepare, please sign up for a future workshop instead. About Ron Van Lieu Ron Van Lieu was the Master Teacher of Acting and eventually Chair of the NYU Graduate Acting Program where he taught from 1975 to 2004. In 2004 he was appointed the Lloyd Richards Professor of Acting and Chair of the Acting Program at the Yale School of Drama where he taught until 2017, and where he is now Professor Emeritus. In 2017, Ron was appointed Professor of Professional Practice at the Columbia University School of the Arts Graduate Actor Training Program. Actors who have trained with Ron over the past 50 years have won every major award in the field of theater, acting, and dramatic arts, including the Pulitzer Prize, the Academy Award, Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, Golden Globe, Emmy, and Obie, among others. About the Workshop Choreographer and director Raja Feather Kelly returns to The Actors Center for a 2-day workshop exploring acting through the lens of human behavior. Discover the nuances of task engagement, idle time, and non-verbal expression, while experiencing Raja’s unique devised danced-theatre approach from his company, the feath3r theory. Through immersive exercises and collaborative scene work, participants will enhance their understanding of character, connection, movement, and interaction, unlocking new dimensions of storytelling. Sessions run Tuesdays 10am-2pm. About Raja Feather Kelly Raja Feather Kelly is a choreographer and director, and the Artistic Director of the feath3r theory (TF3T), a Brooklyn-based dance-theatre-media company that he founded in 2009. Over the past decade, he has created 18 evening-length works with the feath3r theory to critical acclaim. Frequent collaborators include Lileana Blain-Cruz, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Sarah Benson, and Michael R. Jackson. His most recent choreography includes White Girl in Danger at the Second Stage Kiser Theater (2023), written by Michael R. Jackson and directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz. He choreographed the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical A Strange Loop (Lyceum Theatre, premiered off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizon) and Fairview (Soho Rep, Berkeley Rep, TFANA), both winners of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. He was hailed by The New York Times as the choreographer who “can make your play move” for his extensive work Off-Broadway. About the Series Company CoLabs are a series at The Actors Center that offer a framework for collaborative explorations and community programming among company members. Company members host or facilitate projects—play reading groups, explorations of new material or approaches, writing labs, devising work, field trips, retreats—in short, anything inspiring to explore among peers. CoLabs offer creative outlets to explore work you might not otherwise have the opportunity for, while continuing to share resources and deepen connections among our Actors Center community.
