Writing can often be isolating and working from home can be distracting. Our hope is to establish a designated space to work collectively each week, making the writing process more communal, offering accountability, and creating an opportunity to hear work aloud. The first two hours of the meeting will be devoted to independent work. You are welcome to use that time however you’d like. There will be three prompts offered at the beginning of each session to inspire if needed. The third hour will be devoted to sharing and reading. Each week, two people will have the opportunity to sign up for a 30-minute slot to use according to what is most helpful for their process. In most cases, the writer will assign roles for their pages, the pages will be read aloud, and if desired, the writer can ask for a round of feedback based upon their specific questions and needs. If you are not writing but would like to join for the reading portion of this gathering to participate or listen to the shared work, you are more than welcome. Sessions run Wednesday mornings from 10am-1pm. About the Workshop Theater maker, screenwriter, and educator Haruna Lee comes to The Actors Center for the first time for a 6-week workshop focusing on “The Pilot”. Learn the fundamentals of TV writing by deconstructing the most important episode of a new series. We'll do a deep dive into the nuts and bolts—going over the structural and technical elements that make up any pilot, as well as reading, watching, and discussing scripts each week to sharpen our analysis. You'll also receive creative writing assignments outside of class to begin your own journey of writing your pilot episode. Sessions run Thursdays starting March 14 from 3:00pm-5:30pm. About Haruna Lee Haruna Lee is a Taiwanese/Japanese/American theater maker, screenwriter, educator and community steward whose work is rooted in a liberation-based healing practice. They wrote for AppleTV+'s Pachinko, HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant, and have been in TV development with Composition 8, Chatham Grove, Alloy Entertainment and WBTV, JuVee, Archer Gray, and other projects. Plays include War Lesbian (Dixon Place 2014), Memory Retrograde (Ars Nova 2017, UTR 2018), plural (love) (WP Pipeline Festival 2022, Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab 2019) and Suicide Forest (Ma-Yi Theater & Bushwick Starr 2019, remount 2020), for which they received an Obie Award for Playwriting and Conception and was on the 2020 Kilroys List. Lee has received the Steinberg Playwright Award, the Ollie New Play Award, FCA Grants to Artists Award, a MacDowell Fellowship including the Keith Haring Fellowship, the Map Fund Grant, the New Dramatists Van Lier Fellowship, and is a currently a member of New Dramatists (2023-2030) and a member of the 2019 artEquity cohort. Their writing has been published by 53rd State Press, Theater Magazine, Table Work. About the Workshop Revered acting teacher Ron Van Lieu, founding faculty member of The Actors Center and former faculty at NYU, Yale, and Columbia, returns for a 2-day scene study workshop. Ron will be working with company members on scenes of your choice from any 20th- or 21st-century play. Sessions meet 11:00am-2:00pm on Saturday and Sunday. Ron will work on up to three scenes each day. You can sign up either together with a scene partner or as an individual and you will be paired with another individual. When registering, you may indicate your availability and you will have a one-hour time slot assigned for your scene accordingly. You should be off-book and well rehearsed with your material for this workshop. If your schedule does not permit sufficient time to prepare, please sign up for a future workshop instead. About Ron Van Lieu Ron Van Lieu was the Master Teacher of Acting and eventually Chair of the NYU Graduate Acting Program where he taught from 1975 to 2004. In 2004 he was appointed the Lloyd Richards Professor of Acting and Chair of the Acting Program at the Yale School of Drama where he taught until 2017, and where he is now Professor Emeritus. In 2017, Ron was appointed Professor of Professional Practice at the Columbia University School of the Arts Graduate Actor Training Program. Actors who have trained with Ron over the past 50 years have won every major award in the field of theater, acting, and dramatic arts, including the Pulitzer Prize, the Academy Award, Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, Golden Globe, Emmy, and Obie, among others. In addition to his university work, Ron is a founding faculty member of both The Shakespeare Lab at the New York Shakespeare Festival Public Theater where he headed the actor training for 10 years, as well as The Actors Center, where is Artistic Director Emeritus. About the Workshop Interdisciplinary artist and teacher Fabio Tavares returns to The Actors Center in May for a series of four sessions devoted to the principles of the Alexander Technique in action. Alexander’s own quest began as an attempt to solve his vocal issues. Later on he realized that body, mind, and breath were all part of the same complex organism, which he called “self”.  In order to look at voice and breath we need to first understand how the body works. In this workshop, Fabio will guide an exploration of ideas and activities to encourage the expansion of the back—lengthening of the spine and widening of the back ribs—to produce sound and movement with more ease and flow. Whether on stage or on set, the principles are the same: A longer and wider back will enable more support, strength, and freedom. In the latter part of each session, participants will be invited to bring in film or TV sides or text to work from, exploring one-on-one adjustments in the work. Sessions run Thursdays and Fridays from 1pm-4pm. About Fabio Tavares Fabio Tavares (he/him) is a Brazilian artist who’s been obsessed with the human body in action from a very young age. He started off as a competitive gymnast before running away to join the circus at the age of 15 where he got his first professional job as an acrobat. Fabio moved to New York in 1999 where he’s been dancing, teaching and making art since. He has collaborated and performed with Yvonne Meyer, chameckilerner, Miguel Gutierrez, Fisherspooner, Noemie Lafrance, Luis Lara Malvacías, Jeniffer Monson, Circus Amok, John Heginbotham, Laurie Anderson,The Dazzle Dancers, The Daisy Spurs, Stanley Love, Anna Kohler, Anne Bogart and the acclaimed SITI Company. Fabio has danced with Elizabeth STREB and her extreme-action company for 14 years where he served as the Associate Artistic Director for a decade. Fabio’s one man show The Ex-Body based on the text “The Hamletmachine” by Henier Müller has been performed in Brazil, Europe and the US since 2010. Later on he realized that body, mind, and breath were all part of the same complex organism, which he called “self”.  In order to look at voice and breath we need to first understand how the body works. In this workshop, Fabio will guide an exploration of ideas and activities to encourage the expansion of the back—lengthening of the spine and widening of the back ribs—to produce sound and movement with more ease and flow. Whether on stage or on set, the principles are the same: A longer and wider back will enable more support, strength, and freedom. In the latter part of each session, participants will be invited to bring in film or TV sides or text to work from, exploring one-on-one adjustments in the work. Sessions run Thursdays and Fridays from 1pm-4pm. About Fabio Tavares Fabio Tavares (he/him) is a Brazilian artist who’s been obsessed with the human body in action from a very young age. He started off as a competitive gymnast before running away to join the circus at the age of 15 where he got his first professional job as an acrobat. Fabio moved to New York in 1999 where he’s been dancing, teaching and making art since. He has collaborated and performed with Yvonne Meyer, chameckilerner, Miguel Gutierrez, Fisherspooner, Noemie Lafrance, Luis Lara Malvacías, Jeniffer Monson, Circus Amok, John Heginbotham, Laurie Anderson,The Dazzle Dancers, The Daisy Spurs, Stanley Love, Anna Kohler, Anne Bogart and the acclaimed SITI Company. About the Workshop Acclaimed director, acting teacher, and head of Juilliard's Drama Division, Evan Yionoulis, returns to The Actors Center in June for three days devoted to the work of Henrik Ibsen. Evan will guide an exploration of three of Ibsen's later plays, The Lady From the Sea, The Master Builder, and Little Eyolf, which venture beyond the social constraints of earlier works such as A Doll’s House and Hedda Gabler, to landscapes with greater, unseen forces at play. We'll explore the moment-to-moment demands of Ibsen’s dialogue and examine the actor’s work in arriving at character needs that meet the size of the world of these plays. Together in pairs, participants will prepare a scene from one of the three plays and will have the opportunity to work twice over the workshop. Sessions run Monday from 10am-5pm, and Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am-2pm. You can sign up either together with a partner or as an individual and you will be paired with another individual. You do not need to know what scene you're working on before signing up. In-Person Workshop PATRICK PAGE: Shakespeare 2-Day Workshop Dates & Times Friday, September 13, 2024 – 1:00pm-5:30pm (Rescheduled to 9/15) Saturday, September 14, 2024 – 1:00pm-5:30pm Sunday, September 15, 2024 – 1:00pm-5:30pm Houghton Hall, 22 East 30th St, 2nd Floor, Ballroom This workshop is open to observers and all company members are invited to attend. About the Workshop Acclaimed actor and teacher Patrick Page joins The Actors Center for the first time for a two-day workshop devoted to exploring the language of Shakespeare. Shakespeare's plays were written for a group of highly skilled players with a shared understanding of the principles that brought his words to life. Patrick will offer participants a practical method for approaching Shakespearean text, merging the classical techniques of rhetoric, meter, imagery, and sound with our modern system, grounded in identifying intentions, targets, and actions, and then personalizing the material to make it truthful. Participants are asked to bring in a monologue of their choice to work from and will leave the workshop with a concrete system that can be applied and practiced over time. Sessions run 1pm-5:30pm on Friday and Saturday afternoon. About Patrick Page Patrick Page has been called “One of America’s greatest classical actors” by the Wall Street Journal. His one-man show All the Devils Are Here—How Shakespeare Invented the Villain recently played to six months of sold-out houses Off-Broadway, garnering the Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Solo Performance. The show will play The Guthrie Theatre for two months this Fall, before beginning a national and world tour. He is an Associate Artist of The Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington DC, where his recent performance as King Lear was called “The best in my lifetime” by Washington Post critic Peter Marks, becoming the highest grossing Shakespeare in that theatre’s history. Other roles at STC include Iago (Helen Hayes Award), Coriolanus (Emery Battis Award), Claudius, Prospero, and Macbeth. Patrick is also an Associate Artist of The Old Globe Theatre, where his roles include Cyrano (Craig Noel Award) and Malvolio. About the Workshop Actor, teacher, and Juilliard faculty member, Kathleen McNenny, returns to The Actors Center for a workshop this September devoted to Physical Acting using the tool of the Mask. Kathleen approaches acting from the psychophysical, meaning the body is wiser than the brain. When we move, the body and the internal world are awakened, firing up the imagination and the feeling world. The mask is the catalyst, creating a sense of safety that allows for deep transformation. The mask encourages the imaginative body and voice to come play. In a time where self-taping alone in our rooms is the norm, it is joyful to dive into rooms and exchange energy with others. Sessions run Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, 2:00pm-5:00pm. About Kathleen McNenny Kathleen is a native of Montana. She holds a BFA from University of Montana and a diploma from The Juilliard School of Drama. She studied mask with Pierre Lefebvre and Mina Yakim. She currently teaches physical acting using the tool of the mask at The Juilliard School, The Bill Esper Studios, The Lucid Body House, and The Actors Center, and previously at Rutgers, UCSD, Cap21 as well as other studios. She has taught at Juilliard for over 20 years, helping actors make the transition from school into the business. Her professional acting credits include Broadway productions of The Minutes, The Father, Fish in the Dark, An Enemy of the People, Death of a Salesman, Coram Boy, The Constant Wife, After the Fall, A Few Good Men. Off-Broadway: Gates of Gold, Mind Game, Three Travelers, Comedy of Errors, Twelfth Night, Winters Tale.
