Watson, Blues for an Alabama Sky takes place in a Depression-era Harlem apartment building. New roommates Angel and Guy’s lives are upturned when a Southern newcomer Leland arrives and falls hard for Angel, who is torn between a stable life in New York City and an exhilarating overseas adventure with Guy. The production closed May 28.
Company members Jill Larson and Alison Cimmet are in the film The Wrath of Becky, now in theaters. Written and directed by Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote, the film stars Lulu Wilson and Seann William Scott. Two years after she escaped a violent attack on her family, Becky attempts to rebuild her life in the care of an older woman—a kindred spirit named Elena. But when a group known as the “Noble Men” break into their home, attack them, and take her beloved dog, Becky must return to her old ways to protect herself and her loved ones.
Company member Heather Alicia Simms is in Trouble in Mind at Hartford Stage. Written by Alice Childress and directed by Christopher D. Betts, this dramatic satire tracks the nuanced, simmering tension between the artists of a biracial company working on a Broadway-bound premiere. As they rehearse, questions about the play emerge, igniting an impassioned debate about race, power, the roles we play on stage, and the roles we play in life. Now onstage through June 18. Hot Angry Mom is making its New York debut Friday May 19th as part of the Big Apple Film Festival. Written by and starring company member Mel House, and directed by Clarissa de los Reyes, Hot Angry Mom is a feminist punk rock comedy series about a mom who has finally had enough, and what happens when a video of her having an epic meltdown goes viral. For moms, theatre nerds, those impacted by #metoo, and anyone who has ever struggled with their rage, the series asks, “what does healthy anger look like? And how can we transform it into a source of power to create a more safe and equitable world?” Mel recently won Best Actress in a Short-Form Series at the LA WebFest. The cast includes company members Ivory Aquino, Pun Bandhu, Lindsay Brill, and Welker White. Watch the trailer.
Company members Heather Alicia Simms and Sanjit De Silva appear in Richard III, streamed on PBS as part of its Great Performances series. Filmed last summer at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park and presented by The Public Theater, the production starred Danai Gurira in the title role, with Heather playing Queen Elizabeth and Sanjit playing Buckingham. Tony nominee Robert O’Hara directed. The cast also included Ali Stroker, Monique Holt, Sharon Washington, and Gregg Mozgala.
Company member Mark H. Dold is in a new film, Jimmy and Carolyn, now available to stream. Written and directed by James Andrew Walsh, Jimmy and Carolyn are the original rebel without a cause born and raised in rural Rhode Island and the Italian-American big city beauty queen from Providence. On a whim, to celebrate Jimmy’s 75th birthday, they decide to drive up from Florida to Westerly, RI to surprise their son. Returning home to New England triggers painful memories and crushing regrets for Jimmy and Carolyn, as they struggle with the past and the now-or-never choices they face if they are to remain a family. Playwright Rajiv Joseph’s wonderfully funny and remarkably moving new play chronicles the unexpected friendship between two men whose intertwined fortunes are tied to those of their idol. Company member Christopher Ryan Grant is understudying in Thanksgiving Play on Broadway. When a troupe of really, really well-meaning theater artists attempt to put on a culturally sensitive Thanksgiving school pageant, things get messy. Written by Larissa Fasthorse and directed by Rachel Chavkin, this hilarious and poignant play skewers everything right, wrong, and woke in America. Company member Karl Bury directs the National Tour of Last Out. Army green beret Danny Patton is a modern-day warrior fighting battles that range from tribal Afghanistan to his own living room. As the corrosive gears of war begin to rip apart his family, his integrity, and his soul, Danny is thrust into his final, eternal mission. Written by Scott Mann and produced by The Heroes Journey, the mission of this production is to validate the journey of military veterans and their families while building genuine and well-informed understanding in the communities where they live.
