Marjan Neshat returns to the cast ofย Selling Kabulย at Playwrights Horizons, a new play by Sylvia Khoury that premiered at Williamstown in 2019. The play, which charts the human cost of the U.S. military involvement in (and withdrawal from) Afghanistan, started previews November 17 and runs through December 23.

14 Nov: Lizan Mitchell in Erika Dickerson-Despenzaโ€™s Cullud Wattah at The Public Theater

Lizan Mitchell plays โ€˜Big Maโ€™ in the world premiere ofย Cullud Wattah,ย aย new Afro-surrealist play by Erika Dickerson-Despenza at The Public Theater, directed by Candis C. Jones. The play, which follows three generations of Black women living in Flint, Michigan, during the water crisis, arrives Off-Broadway after earning the playwright the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize earlier this year.ย Cullud Wattahย runs through December 12 with a castย including Crystal Dickinson, Andrea Patterson, Alicia Pilgrim, and Lauren F. Walker.

As a recent guest on โ€œBrooklyn Magazine: The Podcast,โ€ Marjan Neshat says, โ€œI donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve ever done a play that has been as necessary in the sense that now I feel like Afghanistan is in the human psyche in a totally different wayโ€ฆ.These are incredibly good people in impossible circumstances. Sometimes, living in America, we can distance [ourselves],โ€ she says. โ€œI would like [the audience] to look at these people and go, โ€˜That could be my brother or my sisterโ€™ โ€ฆ And the impossible situation that theyโ€™re in is not removed from our countryโ€™s decisions.โ€

09 Nov: John Cariani in Caroline, or Change on Broadway

Caroline, or Change returns to Broadway with Roundabout Theatre Company and a cast led by Londonโ€™s three-time Olivier Award winner Sharon D Clarke. Company member, John Cariani, plays the role of Stuart Gellman. A story of a Black woman working as a maid for a Jewish family in 1963 Louisiana, the celebrated show was created by Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner and Tony Award winner Jeanine Tesori and this production is directed by Michael Longhurst. Performances run through January 9, 2022.
