About the Workshop Actor, director, and playwright Seret Scott joins The Actors Center for a one day workshop and sharing of work, exploring writing through first-person narratives. “For several years, I've been invited to read from my journals at universities or subscriber events at regional theatres,” says Seret. “My stories range from the mid-60's young black culture to the current arts and politics of today. It's become clear to me that my first-hand experiences—of black theatre history, civil rights, Vietnam protests, counter-culture-east-village NYC, and my acting-directing-writing career—are informative in another way. They're not in a book or documentary. I was there. My spoken journals allow me to convey the emotions of those experiences, along with the actual events. Although these stories are solidly mine, I also speak for millions of women—of-color and others—who didn’t write it down.” Part generative writing workshop and part communal sharing, Seret will read from her own writings and guide participants through conversation and exercises exploring the power of personal narrative and history, with time at the end for participants to share work of their own. About Seret Scott Seret Scott is a theatre director, playwright, and actress who starred in Kathleen Collins seminal film, Losing Ground. Her Broadway acting credits include For Colored Girls and My Sister, My Sister, for which she won a Drama Desk Award. She has directed off-Broadway and at regional theatres across the country. In 2020 she was honored with the Gordon Davidson Directing Award for Lifetime Achievement in Regional Theatre. Off-Broadway directing credits include PanAsian Rep, The Acting Co, National Black Theatre, Second Stage, New Victory. Regional directing credits include The Old Globe, Court Theatre, Yale Rep, Westport Country Playhouse, Arena Stage, Woolly Mammoth, Ford Theatre, Atlas/DC, Oregon Shakespeare, South Coast Rep, ACT, Long Wharf, Hartford Stage, Baltimore Center Stage, Studio Theatre, Denver Center, Crossroads, Two River, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Indiana Rep, Alliance Theatre, and PlayMakers Rep, among others.
