About the Workshop Multidisciplinary artist and teacher Budi Miller and dramaturg Taylor Barfield return to The Actors Center for a 4-day mini-intensive where the power of mask becomes a focal point for deep embodiment of a role and scene study. Training in masks requires us to find the internal power of our most creative selves. Masks unlock the deep knowledge of the physical, emotional, and intuitive body, which directly interacts with taksu—a Balinese concept of performance energy marking the divine moment of manifestation. We'll begin to understand its universal presence and its ability to transcend cultures and become a source of inspiration for our craft. Participants will then have the opportunity to work from the intersection of their own culture on scenes, using a vast network of scripts that Taylor has assembled from around the world. The process aims to enable participants to explore and celebrate their cultural heritage while pushing them in their training, selecting scenes with a focus on cultural nuance and dramatic challenge. Participants will experience a visceral awareness of character transformation and explore aspects of movement, improvisation, ensemble training, character embodiment, and spiritual practice for actors, fostering genuine artistic and spiritual growth. <p data-pm-slice="1 1 About Budi Miller Dr. Budi Miller is the former Head of Acting at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne (UoM), Australia (the first black person to hold this position at one of the top 3 drama schools in Australia). He is the Co-Artistic Director of The Theatre of Others; a Lead Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework, a certified integrative studies practitioner; and an UNESCO designated master teacher of mask work. He teaches acting through Balinese Performing Art Training (BPAT) with Mask Work, Fitzmaurice Voicework, Michael Chekhov, Clown, PEM, Viewpoints, and Grotowski.
