COMPANY EVENT Creating Disability Equity and Allyship in the Arts Dates & Times Tuesday, October 1, 2024 – 6:00pm-7:30pm This event has been postponed About the Event Join company members Christine Bruno, Carey Cox, Joseph Kibler, and ally Jeff Crockett for a dynamic and interactive company conversion that explores creating disability equity in the arts and raising awareness within our community. Together, we’ll dig into where we’ve been, where we are now, where we want to go, and strategies on how to get there. During our 90 minutes together, we’ll unpack history and facts, dismantle common tropes, tackle language, highlight the work of select disabled creatives, past and present, and explore the complicated history and evolving landscape of training, including the importance of ongoing communication, the valuable learning that comes from making mistakes, being willing to make repair and change, and how working with disabled artists benefits everyone. This conversation is open to all company members and there will be plenty of time for questions and discussion. About the Workshop Acclaimed acting coach Ted Sluberski joins The Actors Center for the first time for four Friday mornings devoted to exploring performance on-camera. Ted’s workshops are based on the question, “What do you want to do with this role?” and there is a great deal to consider to effectively answer that question. Regardless of where you are on the call sheet, when the camera is on you, you’re #1 in the shot, so what do you want to do with that opportunity? Ted will collaborate with actors to mine every detail in a script, to be used to build a solid scene, performance, or audition. Once all the analysis is done, Ted will guide participants in exploring what they want to accomplish artistically and how they can collaborate with any project to serve the world of the script, the story, the visual, and most importantly the character, so that their artistic signature is on the role whether it is a guest, recurring, or series regular. Participants will each work twice over the four weeks. Sessions run Friday mornings 10:00am-1:00pm. About Ted Sluberski For the past 20 years Ted Sluberski has worked as an acting coach primarily in film and television. He has collaborated with actors in every genre from Studio features to Indie film and Streaming series to network series. Observers may attend for any portion of each session. About the Workshop Teacher and onset acting coach Leigh Kilton-Smith returns to The Actors Center for four consecutive Thursday afternoons devoted to scene study. Leigh will work with company members on scenes from any 20th- or 21st century play of their choosing. Every scene will work each week, beginning with a first encounter with the text and a particular approach to the memorization process. Throughout, Leigh will offer insights to support actors in being present, listening, trusting connection, and allowing a great story to emerge, with the primary aim that participants leave knowing themselves better as artists. Sessions run 1:00pm-5:30pm. Enrollment is limited to 14 actors. You can sign up either together with a scene partner or as an individual to be paired with another individual. Participants are strongly encouraged to choose material that is new to them, and neither rehearse nor memorize before the first session. If you prefer, Leigh can assign you material or offer suggestions. Occasional conflicts can be accommodated. Ted’s workshops are based on the question, “What do you want to do with this role?” and there is a great deal to consider to effectively answer that question. Regardless of where you are on the call sheet, when the camera is on you, you’re #1 in the shot, so what do you want to do with that opportunity? Ted will collaborate with actors to mine every detail in a script, to be used to build a solid scene, performance, or audition. Once all the analysis is done, Ted will guide participants in exploring what they want to accomplish artistically and how they can collaborate with any project to serve the world of the script, the story, the visual, and most importantly the character, so that their artistic signature is on the role whether it is a guest, recurring, or series regular. Singers of all levels (as well as those who consider themselves non-singers) are welcome! Try out some repertoire, prepare an audition, work on your nerves, or just have fun! Participants will work individually on the song of their choice. An accompanist will be provided. Each participant will choose how to spend their allotted time and if/how they would like feedback from the group. There will be no teacher and facilitators Ka-Ling and Alison will ensure a supportive atmosphere. Observers are welcomed and encouraged! About the Workshop Actor and teacher Sarah Victoria joins The Actors Center for the first time for a weekend workshop devoted to PEM: Perdekamp Emotional Method, an approach to physically accessing authentic emotion. Through body-focused exercises designed to expand emotional range and physically access six key emotions, Sarah will guide actors in learning to come in and out of intense emotional states quickly, safely, and repeatably without needing to refer to traumatic memories or personal story. Participants will learn to organically transition through emotions or combine emotions to cultivate complexity, depth, and nuance in their work, as well as explore how to apply emotion into text work. Beyond the stage and screen, this holistic approach helps to reframe one's understanding of emotions to not only refine artistic skills, but manage auditions and stage-fright, develop emotional intelligence, and improve wellbeing. Sessions run Saturday and Sunday, 10:00am-5:00pm. About Sarah Victoria Sarah Victoria is an actress, PEM Master Instructor, Director and CEO of Kalliso. She is a certified PEM Instructor since 2004 and trained directly with Stephan Perdekamp. She wrote her master thesis about the Perdekamp Emotional Method in 2004. She has been teaching for over 20 years, is on the board of directors of the PEM Center Hamburg as well as an actor in the PEM Ensemble Hamburg and the PEM International Ensemble.
